In many situations we see our decisions as an ‘either/or’ dilemma. Author and Ph.D. Bernie Mayer argues in his new book, The Conflict Paradox, Seven Dilemmas at the Core of Disputes, that the real challenge is to find a new path that incorporates both approaches. These apparently opposing conflict practices need not be mutually exclusive—in fact, each is necessary to the other.
Bernie Mayer is a Professor of Dispute Resolution, at The Werner Institute, Creighton University. For over thirty years he has been a leader in the conflict resolution field. Bernie has facilitated many complex environmental conflicts, commercial and organizational disputes, interpersonal conflicts, public decision-making processes, and has an extensive background in family mediation as well. He is a founding partner of CDR Associates, a pioneering conflict intervention firm. Bernie is the author of many books and articles. His lastest book is, The Conflict Paradox, Seven Dilemmas at the Core of Disputes.

Nothing tempers a man more than experience. I'm wondering why there is so much concern to 'rehabiliate' men who simply lack ability. That discussion isn't new and where has it taken us? Nowhere! The lamentation plagues the Craft and corrosively undermines the philosophy of masonry. We intitiate a fellow without knowing him. Proof of his nature and intellect surfaces onlhy after we have welcomed him into lodge, on a hope he won't disappoint. Sometimes it takes months, sometimes years but always the truth comes out. To only initiate worthy men would require a change of thinking that is beyond the Order. We would be openly selective. Today we act with desparation, recruitment based on a pulse. One senior of a degree-mill lodge explained this was a steady source of revenue- it kept annual fees low. I hope one day I learn to overcome the sense of repulsion I felt toward him. I'm imperfect too and not there yet.
We need to be so much more candid, honest and accepting than we have been because it is toxic to masonry to determine some members are inadequate. Not at all. They are what they are. They get what they get. They give what they feel is in their best interest and there is no more. Move on. Your obligation pointed to a path of enlightenment. That is what you took from initiation, that is your intelligence; your personality; your talents and ambitions. But how does a good mason justify this sense of hubris? For a time, the Romans made it an offence to laud your position over another. And to suggest it should and can be corrected? Isn't that a bit wreckless?
Nothing distinguises superficial masons more than dissonance between his words and his behaviour. Does he act as his words? or does he even understand what he says? Where has the spirit of masonry gone? Perhaps it's hiding with the music.
Listen in to the audio of our children's book which is a metaphor of a real life story of love, friendship, perseverance and everlasting bonds. Juba Kali narrates and Denise Thompson stars as Tori the caterpillar/butterfly.
The video entitled, “French Quarter Tori and the Red Owl” is an animation for the first book collaboration between Cary and Gretchen. The (as-of-yet) unreleased DVD also features Allie Moffet as Lebeau, the Corgi, from the Lower 9th Ward, Steven Wilson who holds the role of Kendall, the mighty owl from the Pacific North West, who guides these friends, and Juba Kali who performed magnificently as the narrator. A heartwarming story loved by children and adults…

Denise is an accomplished actress, salon owner and hair artist, wonderful mother and all around talented woman with a glowing heart and inspirational philosopher on the beauty of daily life. We have extended invites to Allie, Steven, Juba, and Caroline (The book’s illustrator) to call in and join the conversation. You won't want to miss this show.
