Nico Rosberg won the Grand Prix in Monaco with the help of a strategic blunder.
Starting on pole was pivotal for Lewis Hamilton, who was almost certain to win the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco. Hamilton maintained the lead throughout the race and had a 19 second lead over teammate Nico Rosberg. No one could have overtaken him on that particular track, and no one could have taken the race from him until, lap 65, when the youngest driver in Formula 1 Max Verstappen ran head on into the barriers while trying to overtake, Romain Grojean.
A virtual safety car (VSC) was in effect which would have maintained the status quo for the position of drivers, but suddenly, an actual safety car was deployed, and the Mercedes strategist called Hamilton in to pit for a tire change. The move was shocking to fans and the media since Hamilton’s tires were holding up just fine, and he had only 14 laps to go. Mercedes called Hamilton in while Vettel who was in third, and Rosberg in second, stayed out and advanced their positions. By the time Hamilton rejoined the group, he was in third, Vettel was ahead of him in second and Rosberg ahead of Vettel in first. Although Hamilton is still leading the drivers, championship, this was a painful loss. Every other word heard around the F1 universe has been “robbed, Hamilton was robbed.” Fans believe Hamilton is rightfully upset that such a blunder by his strategist could cost him so much. He has consistently praised and thanked his team, even when they mess up his pit stops but by all accounts, this was a bridge too far. Now, fans are asking, “Can Lewis trust the people he depends on?” Coming in fourth and fifth were the Red Bulls, Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen held onto sixth and an impressive drive by Force India’s Sergio Perez, and McLaren driver Jenson Button, put them in seventh and eighth, respectively.
