John Smart began working on feature film in the Art department while still in college at the University of New Mexico where he received a BFA in theater. After a number of years working on such films as The Big Easy, Heathers, and Barfly - he decided to teach in Los Angeles and at school for teens who’d gotten in trouble with drugs. He became known for bringing film industry professionals to the school as guest speakers and mentors. Establishing a relationship between the school and the local film and TV industry that lasted long after he was gone. When John returned to working on films he dove into legal clearances. He’s worked on a long list of projects including: The Good Lie, Don Jon, 2 Guns, Shopgirl, The Hot Flashes, Linsanity, Looper, Bullet To The Head and approximately 60 other films, TV shows and DVD games. He loves clearances because he can both assist in legally getting a production difficult items they may want or need for a project - but more importantly a Clearance administrator is one of the last firewalls a production has avoid legal action - and a copyright infringement claim can be lethal for a film. Television, a medium of communication. Television was not invented by a single inventor, instead many people working together and alone over the years, contributed to the evolution of television.
The 'first' generation of television sets were not entirely electronic. The display (TV screen) had a small motor with a spinning disc and a neon lamp, which worked together to give a blurry reddish-orange picture about half the size of a business card! The period before 1935 is called the "Mechanical Television Era". This type of television is not compatible with today's fully-electronic television system.
Join Young Media Critics host Juanita Richburg Seon and her young associate Erika Shoemaker as they explore the medium "Television" on this week's "I'll Have a Medium, Please - Television!
