Although the story of Chanukkah is not recorded in the canonical books of the Bible, the Feast of Dedication is mentioned in the New Testament Gospel of John (John 10:22). The miraculous account of the Maccabees' victory and re-dedication of the Temple is recorded in the Books of he Maccabees.

It was instituted by Judas Maccabeus, his brothers, and the elders of the congregation of Israel, in the year 165 B.C. in commemoration of the reconsecration of the Temple in Jerusalem.
