The Power of Healthy Habits & Best Practices for Employee Communication

    in Business

On this week's program, hosts Andrew Dietz and Doug Field welcome special guests from WellRight and GuideSpark to the program to discuss trends and best practices in workplace wellness, employee engagement and more.

For the first segment, the hosts welcome two guests from WellRight – Tad Mitchell, president and CEO, and Michael Guercio, content manager – to discuss their newly published book on workplace wellness. Co-authors Michael and Tad set off on a journey to figure out what makes people healthy. Their goal was to cut through today’s information overload and create a concise list of what is most important. Along the way, they discovered the power of habits. The result is a remarkably fresh and simple approach to wellness. In this interview, Michael and Tad will share the highlights of their journey and explain how their approach to wellness works.

For the second segment, the hosts talk with Keith Kitani, CEO and co-founder of GuideSpark. The choices surrounding health care and benefits can be particularly tricky for employees; the industry jargon and sheer volume of the materials associated with benefits are often overwhelming. Yet, as benefits continue to be a differentiating factor for many organizations, in terms of attracting new talent and retaining current employees, employers must be able to simplify these often complicated topics and ensure their employees are well educated on the options available. Figuring out how best to communicate complex information in a way that enables employees and their families to identify and enroll in the best options is key to creating an engaged, satisfied, healthy and productive workforce.

  • Show #123: Employee Engagement for the Individual and Team - Which Comes First?

    in Business

Special Guest: Jamie Lawrence, Editor, HRZone.com

Effective engagement requires both an individual and collective focus but it seems that many companies focus on engaging the individual rather than thinking about the collective units – teams. The basic unit at work is the team, with a line manager at the helm, and there’s an argument that human beings as social creatures require high levels of engagement with their social working environment as a pre-requisite to individual engagement. Is it a chicken or egg scenario? Should companies be focusing on both from different, or similar, angles? Either way, as more research looks at group effectiveness and inclusiveness at work, there’s doubt we need to focus more on engaging the collective as well as the individual.

Jamie Lawrence is editor of global online HR publication and community HRZone.com He regularly speaks to audiences of 250+ and has interviewed key HR industry names, including Daniel H. Pink. Jamie has worked previously as a small business journalist and a copywriter and has published non-fiction that reached #2 in the NYT Children’s Bestseller List. Jamie is committed to driving forward the HR agenda through HRZone.com and making sure that HR Directors have the knowledge and insight necessary to ensure HR has influence across the whole organisation.

Show #114: Mapping Informal Employee Networks to Build Better Organisations

    in Business

Special Guest: András Vicsek, Co-Founder and Head of Research at Maven7 and Designer and developer of social network analysis solutions based on the technologies of the future.

Organisations are becoming more and more complex, more connected, and therefore more difficult to manage. There are multiple hierarchy levels, functions, projects, job roles, processes, products, etc, and thus a stronger role of informal networks, which affects organisational performance. The problems of organisations are increasingly complex as well. Many of them are trying to shift from silos and product or project-based teams to cross-functional collaborations.

This is an era marked with rapid change (more frequent organisational restructuring, new IT system implementations, introduction of new strategies, more mergers and acquisitions, etc), which demands more from leaders and managers.

Join us as we, through real life case studies, show how mapping informal employee networks will help:

better manage and accelerate change initiatives
identify previously hidden key employees (experts, high-potentials, change agents) and their positions in the organisational network
    build stronger, more cohesive teams
boost overall organisational performance to benefit the bottom line

András is a work and organisational psychologist, and is responsible for research and product development within Maven7. He is a management consultant and a trainer specialised in social and organisational network analysis.
