The African Leadership Academy has an ambitious goal: to create the next Nelson Mandela, Wangari Maathai, Africa's Steve Jobs. They aim to transform Africa by transforming its most promising young people in to talented, entrepreneurial leaders. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Academy (ALA) was founded in 2004 by Fred Swaniker, Chris Bradford, Peter Mombar and Acha Leke. Their mission holds that the problems that Africa faces will be best solved by "ethical and entrepreneurial leadership" -- well-trained young people who can address the systemic challenges of their countries rather than just treating symptoms of dysfunction. They look for high-potential young people and give them top-quality education with world-class professors and networks.
