What stories do you tell about your life? How do you tell your story? When faced with the unwanted and unexpected, our stories help us make sense of tragedy and loss. Stories give us structure and a frame and help us adapt to change. Words are powerful and the narratives we create can keep us bumping along in familiar ruts or jolt us onto new paths. Tonya Parker helps us identify characteristics of rut stories and river stories. She teaches us how to recognize when we are telling a rut story, shows how our rut stories might obstruct us, and then she offers us her four step process to get out of our rut story and into our river story. Come prepared to sharpen your inner listening skills and take a look at how you tell your own personal narrative to yourself and others. Learn to identify your personal favorite rut stories and how they hold you back. Play with the process and turn one of your rut stories into a river story. Change your story, change your life!

Authors Words-It’s my hope that sharing this story will help another child of an addict cope with those same feelings and realize that he or she is not alone. For others, I hope this book will more clearly detail the facts that many will never experience first-hand, facts that appear as stories in a newspaper or scenes in movies or police shows. As the child of a drug addict, these facts are a living part of my 32-year-old history.

As our loved ones age, many factors such as physical illness, diminishing mental capacity, and dementia can make them vulnerable to neglect, abuse, and exploitation by caregivers, family members, or others. There are a number of Illinois laws and mechanisms in place to prevent and respond to these types of elder abuse. In this podcast with Heather Walser of Lavelle Law, we will explore: (1) the options available to help prevent these types of elder abuse, and (2) the steps you should take if you suspect that a friend or loved one has been the victim of elder abuse.
