USA Freedom Act: passed by relative landslide this week in GOP House, awaiting Senate action, reportedly ends direct state bulk collection of phone records revealed (again) by Snowden, forces telecoms into bulk collection role
Second Circuit Appeals court ruled this month that the Patriot Act did not, in fact, authorize the massive vacuuming up of people's communication data undertaken by U.S. spy agencies, despite ubiquitous, off-record claims to the contrary by "the intelligence community"
Court records can give the public some idea as to how the telecom oligopolies are responding to both of these events, indications being that a likely scenario is the largely unabated supply of communications information to the government
On May 31st of this year, Section 215 of the Patriot Act --used to support claims that nationwide, communications dragnet collection is authorized by law-- is expiring
Cyberwar-- NSA's dual responsibility of defending US networks and acquiring offensive capability for exploits like Stuxnet.
Commentary from Marcy Wheeler, Stuart Zechman and Jay Ackroyd. Political satire from Culture of Truth.
The 2015 Virtually Speaking Media Panel: Andrew Jerrell Jones, Avedon Carol, Cliff Schecter, David Dayen, Dave Johnson, David Waldman, digby, Gaius Publius, Joan McCarter, Marcy Wheeler, RJ Eskow, Stuart Zechman. Alternates: Susan Madrak, Sara Robinson, Spocko, Charles Lenchner
Domestic security is getting pretty complicated, what with miliarized police operations, cameras documenting events that were previously unaccessible, "non-lethal" weapons that aren't really, and a really extensive internal security system. Marcy Wheeler and digby discuss these issues. Marcy summarizes the current understanding of who and how American citizens are being surveilled. Digby has been on the taser front from the beginning.
Crime rates are way down. Incarceration rates are an embarrassment, pointlessly ruining the lives of millions of Americans. Police departments are more diverse, especially in urban centers. A consensus against the drug war seems to be growing--but the Feds and the local asset seizure programs don't want to acknowledge that consensus.

Do you like to be in control and at times freak out, when things aren’t going your way? Are you known to bang your head against the wall, in an effort to get what you want? If so, you may have noticed that the more you are trying to micromanage your life and the people around you, the stronger the fear of losing control becomes. Often things flow more smoothly and quickly, if we give up control and allow them to happen instead of making them happen. Yet most of us have a hard time surrendering, because we liken it to defeat, giving up or powerlessness. The truth is, when we surrender we stop paddling upstream, we no longer battle ourselves and our lives, but allow life to unfold with greater ease and grace. Join, Dr. Friedemann Schaub, author of The Fear and Anxiety Solution, and Dr. Pat Baccili, and learn more how surrendering can become an empowering practice in your life.
The staff of White Apple Institute offers deepest condolescences to everyone affected by the massacre in South Carolina on June 17, 2015.
The term discrimination is too often associated with racism versus disability. In addition, racism and discrimination are frequently related in the U.S. media to the victimization of African-Americans and other Non-White groups by White Americans. As a result, African-American students with mental/learning or physical disabilities are often overlooked as they face the challenges of higher education and workforce success. Dr. Applewhite is joined by Special Guest Professor Kelmer Muhammad (Educator, Entrepreneur, Author) to discuss discrimination and realistic solutions. Veterans conclude our show with their response to discrimination and news updates for Student Veterans with Mitch Caviness. This show is a rerun that aired previously on Students Discuss the Reality of Discrimination. 12-6-14.Your one-time or monthly recurring tax-deductible donation of $5 or more to White Apple Institute will support our radio broadcasts, and allow us to continue helping Adult Learners/Students and Veterans with disabilities reach their education and workforce goals.
