    Let's support local talent!

    in Current Events

I decided to do this show after the amazing time I spent with local band True Soul at the Bucaneer Lounge this past weekend! Myself along with Vonda Gainer decided to see them in their element because they perform at the Bucaneer frequently. You may ask yourself why is she hypeing them and I will tell you it is because PC is sleeping on this local band. I first saw Glenn (lead singer) and someone on guitar over a year ago on I believe it was on Don Arias's show Wakin' up with Don on Fox 28 and he sang Sitting on the dock of the Bay by Wilson Pickett. I loved it! I first caught them live at Fri Fest last year and they had me at Sarah Smile which is one of my all-time favorites. I liked their Facebook page and began to keep up with their schedule. This phenomenial band is local so we don't have to take a ride to see them. They are probably PC's best kept secret! What I do know that this is hard to break into anything areound here. This is a tricky area therefore we have to support one another. Sometimes it is all about connections. True Soul is an awesome band and if you appreciate live music then this is the group for you. Glenn is the lead and has crazy vocals, Street is the drummer and a beast, Perry is on keyboard and a sax, and JC is on guitar. I forgot who is on bass guitar but he is bad too. They sing a wide range of songs and I love how they put their spin on it while still doing the original song justice. I met a young man who I am not going to name right now because you will know about him soon enough but he sang acapella with no warm up out in the cold and I will say this he got next. Stay tuned! On April 17 True Soul will be a Club Deja Vu for the Sir Charles Show! This is huge and some of you who are not familiar with them will get to see. They will be also be a Friday Fest this Friday. So let's support them and any other local acts!

Mayoral Candidates Speak: Are Blacks And Latinos Allies or Rivals?

    in Women

Census figures indicate growing numbers of Latino citizens, based on new births and new immigrants. On issues such as immigration reform, multilingual education and minority set aside programs for contractors, African Americans and Latinos often find themselves pitted against each other as rivals for jobs, contracts and economic resources. Among men, both groups are often the recipients of racial profiling and media stereotyping as criminals. There are white gangs as well as African American and Latino gangs, yet when issues of gang violence are addressed white males are not the targets of police crackdowns, black and Latino males are. Chicago Mayoral candidates Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and William "Dock" Walls address the relationship between African Americans and Latinos and how it will affect this year's election.

    Chicago First Mayoral Debate

    in Politics

"While the center of the city has flourished tremendously, we need to see the same vitality in Chicago neighborhoods and  promised to hire 1,000 new police officers. There really is a contrast between the central business district and the neighborhoods, the editorial board. "Over the past few years in particular the contrast has sharpened. ... The neighborhoods have been left behind."said Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia.

As the mayor sat in the middle, his four challengers sat feet away, repeating a theme that Emanuel was more focused on downtown, and not so much on Chicago neighborhoods.
"Emanuel  closed 50 schools, he has closed the mental health clinics in Chicago," said William "Dock" Walls.
Ald. Bob Fioretti, 2nd, had a chance to make headlines. He promised me before the debate that he wouldn't "back down" from his allegations earlier in the week that the mayor all but killed an investigation into a strong-arm robbery of Rahm's teenage son.

A new poll released Monday by Ogden & Fry, conducting weekly polls for the mayoral race, it appeared Garcia could force a run-off election. The poll showed Emanuel with a clear lead and 39.5 percent of the vote, Garcia with 18 percent, Wilson with 11.1 percent and Fioretti with 7.5 percent.
The Victory Research poll of 806 “likely Chicago voters,” showed Emanuel leading with 36.4 percent of the vote. Fioretti was in second with 18.2 percent of the vote and Garcia in third at 12 percent. Wilson and William “Dock” Walls followed in fourth and fifth place with 8.6 percent and 0.9 percent, here was a margin of error of 3.45 percent.

Live Show From Mangrove Killing Protest

    in Politics Progressive

Live Show  From  Mangrove Killing Protest

To the southern end of Palma Sola Boulevard, across from the Palma Sola Bay Club development site. Bring your signs.

Tell developers and prospective home buyers they should not sacrifice protected species for personal vanity. Join our celebration of Arbor Day. Let the world know you want justice for mangroves.

The majority of the Planning Commissioners today voted to approve the observation deck. The Planning Staff and the developers' representatives denied knowing about the DEP investigation. They claimed they used a certified cutter and that mostly what they cut were vines and Brazilian Pepper. Not true. But as usual, citizens are not allowed to rebut. Only developers, their spokespeople, and planning staff are. I presented evidence, including my documented phone call to the DEP, about the site. The other thing I learned--and I am appalled by this--is that our planning staff did not visit the site prior to deciding to approve the observation deck. How can you approve something for a sensitive conservation easement and never visit it prior to making your decision? That is poor practice, in my opinion. I stated that the DEP rep told me that citizens' concerns were "legitimate" and that the mangrove cutting at the site had "exceeded the limits of the scope of the general permit." I had heard that weeks ago Commissioner Chappie had been informed about the cutting and the dEP inquiry, and I have an email from a Palma Sola resident to the DEP rep in which she tells the rep to send documentation to Chappie when it is ready.http://www.thebradentontimes.com/news/2015/01/15/opinion/developer_s_dock_request_looks_like_two_step_circumvention_of_mangrove_policy/
