    Sedgrid Lewis, Cyberbully App

    in Family

The CHWR team welcomes to the show Sedgrid Lewis, Cyberbully App, so call in early to get your questions asked and answered.

Bully Block Top 6 Smartphone Security App for Children... The controversy over smartphones for children continues to escalate. Some argue that it may be actually educational for the children, while others maintain that it’s simply a useless distraction. However, children are gaining more and more exposure to smartphone technology.

A survey conducted by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center and detailed in The Wall Street Journal reports that most parents “allowed their kids to use a smartphone at least occasionally.” Moreover, “About two-thirds of the children said they have used an iPhone before, and almost two thirds said it was “easy” or “very easy” to use.”

In a study done in February 2010 by the Cyberbullying Research Center, over 4000 students were randomly surveyed ages 10-18 from 37 different schools. Many stats from this study stood out to me (you can read the entire article by True Care Awareness Online here), but the most significant one in my opinion is the fact that 20% of the students have been cyber-bullied in their lifetimes. Astoundingly, 17% of them have been cyber-bullied within the last 30 days!

As a high school counselor at my day job I have seen firsthand the prevalence and impact cell phones have in schools. Rumors, threats, harassment, and teasing are all very common in the school setting via cell phone; students no longer have to physically be present to harass someone.

    Parents facebook liability

    in Legal

Are parents responsible for the online conduct of their kids?  Attorney Steve weighs in on this extremely important "digital age" legal topic.  Your kids need to understand basic digital etiquette and what's at stake if they go around bullying or intimdating people online, even if it is just a prank.  If the parents know about something and don't take corrective measures, they might find themselves in a position facing a state or federal lawsuit for the acitivites on facebook, youtube, twitter, instagram, text messaging, or even email, carried out by their kids.  For example, if your kids engage in cyberbullying or copryight infringement, could the parents be sued?  Could this lead to suspension at school?

It is always important to undertand that in our litigious world anyone can be sued for anything, so it is crucial that you build a relationship with your kids, understand them as people, but also to understand what they are doing online.

You owe it to them to protect their brand and their reputation as one screw up can leave them dealing with negative internet publicity, dealing with lawsuits and potentially impacting their future career potential.

Would YOU know if your child was being Bullied online?

    in Education

Are your kids being Cyber Bullied?
Would you know if it was happening?
    Do you know the sign?
Cyber bullying can be very damaging to adolescents and teens. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Also, once things are circulated on the Internet, they may never disappear, resurfacing at later times to renew the pain of cyber bullying.
Many cyber bullies think that bullying others online is funny. Cyber bullies may not realize the consequences for themselves of cyberbullying. Research suggests that between 20 - 30% of students will experience cyberbullying and between 10 - 20% of students will be a cyberbully at some point.
Cyber bullies and their parents may face legal charges for cyber bullying, and if the cyber bullying was sexual in nature or involved sexting, the results can include being registered as a sex offender.
Join us as we discuss cyber bullying, the signs, the impact and some solutions.

    Bullying, Cyberbullying, iPredator

    in Education

Cyberbullying is the act of directing threatening or disparaging information at a target child using Information and Communications Technology. Cyberbullying is harmful, repeated and hostile behavior intended to taunt, embarrass, deprecate & defame a targeted child. Dissimilar to classic bullying, cyberbullying includes Cyberbullying by proxy, which is when a cyberbully encourages or persuades others to engage in deprecating and harassing a target child. www.iPredator.co. As author of the Information Age Forensics construct, iPredator, and internet safety website, www.iPredator.co, Dr. Nuccitelli discusses why some children are prone to cyberbullying and why some cyberbullies grow into adult iPredators.
