SORT BY Relevancy
Public schools are closing in cities across America and the ones that remain open are questionable when it comes to offering relevant information and preparation for life in a safe learning environment. But whereas public schools have often been dismal failures in America's urban areas, private, culturally based schools have had tremendous success. What is the missing ingredient. Haki and Safisha Madhubuti, founders of The Institute of Positive Education, discuss their journey as educators, publishers, and founders of several learning institutions that focus on African history and cultural values. As IPE prepares for an anniversary celebration this weekend, the Madhubutis reflect on the social andfinancial challenges involved in running independent schools.
Join us as we discuss Malaysian plane crash, and what happened. Then listen to us discuss Sandy Hook's "Crisis Actors" and if they really exist. Do you think the government provides actors for tragic situations to exaggerate and control our fears? Tune in and find out!
This was a hard weekend for many educators. The verdict of the Georgia Zimmerman case triggered an emotional response from teacher, parents, students, educational leaders and concerned citizens.
People all around the country expressed deep sentiments of frustration at the criminal justice system and the policies that some find inherently unjust. Trayvon Martin has become a symbol of the institutional discriminatory practices many feel are built into the systems our students encounter. This is not new however. In this episode we will look in how race, education and policy intersected historically. We will examine the contributions of intellectuals such as James Baldwin, bell hooks and Cornel West to the quest for solutions to the crisis in educating students of color. This will be the first episode in a series focusing on race and educational policy
More than Just a Good Idea: Education Research Guide to Product Development
Ideas abound for new teaching methodologies, and curriculum, and each claims to be innovative and effective. Governments throughout the world fund a wealth of research into educational strategies and instructional design every year, yet we find that these communities often don’t communicate well with each other. It is not unusual for popular educational solutions to lack research into their effectiveness and how best they can be applied. Equally unusual, many educational research programs, in which curriculum is developed, never see the commercial light of day, or broad distribution.
We will examine what educational research brings to improving products today and in the future and how publishers can take advantage of research findings to improve their offerings.
Host Michael Jay and our leading education thinkers will contemplate the following:
How closely tied is today’s research programs to educational practice?
Where are there challenges for the research community in working with commercial vendors?
How are requirements at funding agencies changing to bring these communities closer together?
How are our universities and research institutions working to accommodate the commercialization of products from their research?
How can publishers reach out to the research community to improve their offerings and gain greater credibility with the educational community?

This week, I will be having Isaac Moffett on the show to discuss the contract between American schools and Foreign schools. He is currently the host of a podcast "The Great Education Struggle" and an expert on the topic. We will be covering the difference in curriculum, the American standards of common core, and why American students are outperformed by foreigners when the U.S. government spends around $12,000 per student each year.
