  • The View Up Here talks Canada's Digital Future with OpenMedia.ca

    in Politics

October 19, 2015. General election day in Canada. Perhaps the last chance to prevent the irreversible changes to the country that Harper and his machine want to execute. The number of issues caused by CPC malfeasance to this point is never ending. They have had a decade to pervert this once respected nation into insignificance. Internationally and domestically.

Since 2008, OpenMedia.ca has been a leading voice in keeping Canadians aware, informed and able to counteract the measures taken against digital rights. The Declaration of Internet Freedom has five fundamental principles. Expression. Access. Openness. Innovation. Privacy.

Shaped by more than 250,000 people and launched last week, "Canada's Digital Future" is a crowd-sourced election platform packed with ideas from everyday citizens. This initiative of digital rights is urging people to consider Canada's digital future when casting their vote this election. While OpenMedia won’t be endorsing any political party, it does plan to meet the main parties and report back as to which are most committed to implementing its platform. Thousands of people have already pledged to vote for the future of the Internet in the upcoming election.

“Whether it’s telecom price-gouging, reckless spying legislation, or abusive copyright notices, failed digital policies are hurting Canadians,” said OpenMedia’s communications manager David Christopher. “Young people in particular are speaking up for a better way forward, because Canada can’t afford to keep falling behind our international counterparts. That’s why this election will be the most important Canadian Internet users have ever faced.” David joins us to tell us about how your digital rights are under attack. And what OpenMedia.ca is doing on our behalf.

Are Canadians watching the debates or are the debates watching Canadians?

    in Politics

Much has been made this election cycle about the debates of party leaders that have become standard fare for television audiences. Love them or loathe them, they are hard to escape. Brian Mulroney telling John Turner that "You did have a choice, sir" became the template for a debate knockout blow in Canada. Even so, up until this year the "Consortium Debates" were seen as compulsory.

But the CPC campaign inner circle sought to break this mold. Based on the premise that the "leftist media" networks were holding too much control, outside facilitators were sought and encouraged. And they appeared. Rogers Media. Munk School of Global Affairs. Glode & Mail. Once again, political parties created a problem, came up with over 9000 solutions, and nobody is happier than before this began. Except for maybe the CPC.

Perhaps the networks weren't willing or capable of going the new direction that some seem to want. That direction is watching you watch the debates. Nothing is more precious to political parties in an election than "data". More accurately, "positive data". The question has always been is it accurate. Analytics is an ever expanding industry with methods from scientific to semantic. The accuracy of their data depends on the degree of science employed and the transparency of method and researchers.

Amy MacPherson has long been documenting and reporting on the penchant of watching social media by the CPC. Mass surveillance techniques that use a shotgun for a fly. Have you used the hashtags #cdnpoli, #elxn42, #macdebate ? Your opinion is labeling you, fairly or not, to the analytic industry that operates in the shadows. Methods, procedures and clients seem to be rather "secret". Amy tells us where we are headed, for better or worse.

The View Up Here talks Peru, enviro "terror" and complicity of the CPC at home

    in Politics

Considering the effort that Joyce Murray put into her Private Members Bill C-622 to try and bring some basic accountability and transparency to Canada's spy apparatus, and the summarily offensive rejection of it by Emperor and his CPC hordes, Bill C-639 from backbencher Wai Young (CPC) MP Vancouver South seems to have a different reception. Ms. Young, who has spent time on the Public Safety and National Security committee, and is the co-chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association (whatever the hell that is) received hearty endorsement for her bill from none other than Minister of Utter Failure Peter MacKay, who is now masquerading as Minister of *Justice*.

The catch phrase of Bill C-639 is "critical infrastructure" which may include a bus stop bench if some apparatchik deems it so. But then the Corporate Pacification Committee has never been big on definitions. Just on grandiose announcements that seem to amount to a lot of nothing. Right after KinderMorgan's injunction against protest on Burnaby Mountain was ruled illegal. Right after all those arrests of protestors there were thrown out as unconstitutional. Critics inside of Parlaiment and outside it have already sounded the alarm on this bill as yet another example of over-reach and illegal legislation.

And this brings us to Peru. If possible, this is a nation that is even more overt with it's disdain for due process and opposition to resource projects owned by foreign interests than even Emperor Harper. And yes, the Canadian mining sector which is well known for oppression outside of Canada is all for Peru's steps backwards.

The language of Bill C-639 is eerily similar to some recent developments in Peru's Governmental agenda. The usual gang supports these changes wholeheartedly. We will compare them and what it means for Canadians. Now and in the future.

TVUH presents "Election Day in Canada - The Rise of Voter Suppression"

    in Politics

"Election Day in Canada - The Rise of Voter Suppression" opens on the route Stephen Harper walked to work less than 24 hours after the CPC election win on May 2, 2011. He never walks to work but on this day the re-elected Prime Minister of Canada, who 36 days earlier fell on contempt of Parliament, revels in his first "majority" government. In less than 2 weeks Elections Canada investigators will be on the ground in Guelph, Ontario investigating a voter suppression scheme that will result in a national outcry, spark court actions, shake the country's confidence in its electoral system, and government.

This film examines the history and dramatic rise of voter suppression in Canada beginning in 2006 and how Elections Canada was blindsided from the CPC government's "Accountability Act" to the first record of "robocalls" during the 2008 Federal election. Other red flags in the lead up to 2011 were the 2010 Vaughan byelection, followed by the 41st General Election, the aftermath, Council of Canadians court trials, the Michael Sona trial and the scrapped "robocalls" investigation. RackNine, Matt Meier, claims of ignorance from candidates and the "Fair Elections Act" figures in as the film moves through the timeline and travels from Prince Edward Island to Whitehorse.

Peter Smoczynski is a Montreal born, trained and working filmmaker; journalist, researcher, field producer, CBC national news, current affairs, sports and short docs; Los Angeles trained and working screen writer. "I’ve cooked meals for my crews, conducted interviews in penthouses and boxcars, and had cabinet ministers slam the door in my face. It really is a crazy profession. I wouldn’t have it any other way."
