Courtney Walsh has just published her first novel, A Sweethaven Summer. But there is so much more to her story. Among the many hats Courtney wears are playwright, scrapbooker, craft writer – all while raising two beautiful young children. I am always curious how women juggle their passion and their family, and here’s a woman with several passions and talents. I’m excited to get to know the story of Courtney Walsh.
ENVISION THIS: “Enhancing the natural flow of carbons to soil will result in increased microbial diversity, improved nutrient cycles, expanded water holding capacity, greater resilience, improved ecosystem health, and a more satisfying, profitable future for farmers and ranchers”…and, as a co-benefit, sequesters carbon from the atmosphere!
In Grass, Soil, Hope, A Journey through Carbon Country our guest, Courtney White explores the multiple ways CO2, when sequestered in soil, can become our ally instead of our enemy. Here’s just some of the food for thought offers us:
“Carbon is not ‘the bad guy’—carbon is part of our essence. Its story needs to be told and heard. It is our past, present, and future. It is our story. It is the story of grass. The story of green. The color of hope.”
“Every living thing above ground—whether it’s hairy vetch, a mighty ponderosa pine, an elusive coyote, an endangered bird, a busy beaver, or an equally busy human being—depends on the vast universe of life in the soil…and at the heart of this micro world is carbon, the glue that holds the web together.”
“The Greenhorns are the new alchemists. Carbon and glomalin are the new alchemy. Food is the new gold.”
“Art, harmony, beauty, aesthetics—as perceived by us—are all signs of health in nature and ourselves…The principles that made a practice restorative and regenerative were the same ones that made it beautiful.”
“We don’t need to wait for something new under the sun to come along to restore the land and ourselves to health. It’s here.”
Join Courtney and us in exploring these hopeful observations for which Michael Pollan wrote a foreword.
Courtney Allen, creator, producer, and co-writer of the At Risk Web Series. She has been a social caseworker for the past 11 years and these stories along with many others loosely describe the face of the clients we service and the caseworkers themselves. The good, bad, ugly, disgraceful, funny, and scandalous moments are all there.
At Risk chronicles the lives and tragic realities of 5 caseworkers as they attempt to balance the harsh reality of their client’s stories with their own lives.
SHOW NOTES: In our JOYFUL ART OF BUSINESS™ series we explore how to combine the positive benefits of our professional endeavors (“business”) with the overall positive emotional return on our efforts (“joy”). The act of engaging in professional endeavors, in any capacity (i.e., as an employee, employer, entrepreneur, contractor, volunteer, paid, full time, part time, intermittently, etc.) is an expression of our ideas and creative talents (“art”).
In this episode our topic is, “The Real Reason You Can’t Have It All Is…”
So, let’s get right to ‘the answer’!
A) You don’t want ‘it all.’
B) ‘It All’ doesn’t exist.
There are many public discussions that are gender focused regarding the general concept of working outside of a family and unit and contemporaneously working inside of a family unit. The stereotype is that a female is not able to work outside a family unit while working inside of one (and that their work and family will both suffer due to the lack of time and attention). For males the stereotype is that they are not able to work outside the family unit while working inside of one (and that their family unit will suffer due to the lack of time and attention while they prioritize their outside work). There is guilt, shame and regret for males and females in their pursuit of an unattainable fiction ('it all').
In the Harry Chapin song, “Cat’s in the Cradle” a father laments that his child [...]
