In many communities around the country there are community mediation centers supported by volunteer mediators. Community Boards of San Francisco is the oldest community mediation center in the country, started in 1976. The philosophy of community mediation centers is to empower community members to resolve their own disputes rather than resorting to courts or other outsiders to do it for them. Participants in mediation have found that the process helps them feel heard, and increases their understanding of themselves and the other person as well. Community Boards has handled thousands of cases in its 36 year history, and has helped 85% of those who use their mediation services reach a successful agreement.
Cordell Wesselink, is Mediation Program Manager of Community Boards. He has a Master’s Degree in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding from California State University at Dominguez Hills. As the parent of a child with a life-threatening heart defect, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the new "heart world" the family is immediately part of. On this show two mothers who have children with critical congenital heart defects (CHDs) will discuss how they became empowered members of the CHD community by tapping into ways to help others in their community.
Wayverly Mouse-Evangelista will share how her love of arts and crafts enabled her to find a way to reach out to others in the CHD community. She will share what specific items she has created for the heart community and how others can find them.
Susan Vanderpool will share how her situation caused her to see a need for vital information in a heartbeat. She will tell us about how she created a product to calm mothers' fears. Having a school-aged child with a major heart defect in school full-time, away from a loving parent, can be a scary prospect. Ms. Vanderpool shares how her product can relieve parents' anxiety about this situation.
We will also hear from CHD Survivor Natalie McGee how she found a way to give back to her community. Through her own adversity she was able to create a product to help herself and others. Find out what she created and how you can benefit from the creations she and her mother have designed.
Sometimes reaching out to others in need is the best therapy a person can have!
Is it possible to Unite the Autism Community? Can Autistic and Aspie adults, teens and children respectfully come together with parents, educators, service professionals and nonprofit autism organizations to discuss challenges and work toward the common good?
If so, what would that look like? Who would be seated at the table? Who would facilitate the conversation?
How do we calm the chaos, reduce the infighting and begin to work together for a stronger, more united, autism community that focuses on acceptance, empowerment, optimal outcomes and positive life trajectories? How do we provide individuals and families with support, opportunity and connection?
Join Autism Empowerment Radio as Karen Krejcha discusses these challenges. Diagnosed with Asperger syndrome in her 40s, Karen is mom to two sons (8 and 15) also diagnosed on the autism spectrum. As Executive Director and co-founder of the nonprofit, Autism Empowerment, Karen regularly engages in conversation with autistic teens and adults as well as parents and other family members. She sees and hears the frustration from those on the spectrum who want to be respected and accepted and not seen as a burden upon society. She sees and hears from parents who want to do the best for their children but struggle navigating convoluted and conflicting systems of service that sometimes hurt more than they help.
Is it possible to strengthen the Autism Community? We think so!
Let's talk about it.

Dee Hill has been helping put the “Hot” in Hotlanta for more than 15 years. Her entrepreneurial spirit has made her one of the city’s leading media personalities, alongside a number of self-launched ventures that demonstrate her savvy, ambition and keen ability to execute success.
Dee’s career is helmed as the Creator & Owner of Dee Hill Designs, which launched in 2004. Her clothing line has been featured in regional runway fashion shows, featured in indie film “My Line,” and showcased on Atlanta television outlets, including WTJH (Channel 24). A producer at that station was so impressed with her camera-ready persona that he awarded Dee her own TV show, “Dee Hill & Friends,” in which she interviewed Atlanta’s top designers, make-up artists and other trendsetters.
Furthering her media skills, she also worked behind the camera on a number of local TV programs at Channel 24, including “The Alley Pat Show,” “Chicks That Fix Cars” and “The Caribbean Connection.” Wanting to further expand her voice in the region, Dee then launched “The Dee Hill Show” on WAEC-AM (Love 860), which continues to expand its reach and audience every Saturday night, from 7-8 p.m.
In addition, in 1999, Dee created “Atlanta Area Connection,” a print and online magazine that showcases local artists and businesses, while providing an outlet for the Black community to socialize and network. And, as Founder & CEO of the Pink Society, she has assembled a membership of 500+ members, whose mission is to provide a forum for area Women of Color to network and give back to the community, where “ambitious women help other women.”

Project Empowerment is excited to have on author, Karen R. Keonig to discuss her new book, Outsmarting Overeating, Boost Your Life Skills, End Your Food Problems.
Anyone who has struggled to make peace with the refrigerator and the scale can identify with the vicious cycle of painfully forging a bit of progress, only to see it vanish after getting fed up with the struggle to eat healthfully. They become so tired of thinking about all of the “should” and “shouldn’ts” surrounding food that they throw up their hands in despair, and try to accept their eating as it is, until that too becomes frustrating, and the cycle of unsuccessfully trying to improve their eating habits begins all over again.
Outsmarting Overeating: Boost Your Life Skills, End Your Food Problems offers a powerful new approach for stopping this cycle once and for all. The solution it provides has very little to do with food and everything to do with developing the essential skills that the majority of overeaters lack for coping with life’s ups and downs.
Outsmarting Overeating explores eight essential life skills, such as physical self-care, handling emotions, problem solving, and living consciously. It illustrates how lacking each skill can propel individuals toward unnecessary eating, and how, in turn, unwanted eating prevents skill development.
