Host Deardra Shuler talks with Latin artist Willie Colón whose musical talent,passion for humanity and community as well as political activism is well known. Colón still holds the all time record for sales. His collaboration with Ruben Blades, "Siembra", is the biggest selling album of all time for this genre. His collaboration with Hector LaVoe was the milestone that spread this fusion of tropical/urban music throughout Latin America. He has also won 11 Grammy nominations, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Grammy, fifteen gold and five platinum records, and has collaborated with such musical greats as the Fania All Stars, Héctor LaVoe, Rubén Blades, David Byrne, and Celia Cruz.
He has been a visiting professor and lecturer at many prestigious colleges and universities. Colón is involved in civil rights and is a community and political activist. He's Chair of the Association of Hispanic Arts, a member of the Latino Commission on AIDS, a member of the board of the United Nations Immigrant Foundation, Pres. of the Arthur Schomburg Coalition for a Better New York, member of the Bd of Directors, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, et al. In 2010, he scored with his hit Estar lejos.

NOTE from JERRY: "On May 30th I hope to find out whether or not the initial indications of my being cancer-free are still true. A very detailed exam will be done by my doctors at St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa to determine this. If the readings are favorable then I expect to have my colon back as good as new. Within a week or so after the exam everything should be back to pre-operative condition, meaning I will have a new lease on life. Details of results will be displayed on this website. Composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Onel Mulet has performed with a roster of legendary artists including Santos Colon, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez and Celia Cruz as well as internationally renown artists Johnny Pacheco, Bobby Valentin, Ismael Miranda, Larry Harlow, Bobby Cruz, Jose Luis Rodriguez "El Puma", Israel Sardiña of Los Van Van, Arturo Sandoval,Malena Burke, Carlos "Patato" Valdes as well as the notable Cuban Troubadour Pedro Luis Ferrer, and NY-based Grammy nominated artists, David Oquendo and Roman Diaz. Born and reared in Miami, of Cuban heritage, Onels musical environment was anchored by the music of his parents, Cuban masters, and richly influenced by the diversity of American music including Motown, funk, old school Rhythm & Blues, classical music and jazz greats, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito DíRivera and John Coltrane. A graduate of the New World School of the Arts in Florida, he quickly became part of the local Miami music scene.

Master percussionist, scholar and composer Román Díaz is regarded as a “living repository” of Afro Cuban music. Having performed and recorded with the likes of Merceditas Valdes, Raices Profundas, Los Marqueses de Atares,Jane Bunett, Juan Carlos Formell, Orlando “Puntilla” Rios, Paquito D’Rivera, Oriente Lopez, Giovanni Hidalgo As a member of the seminal rumba ensemble Yoruba Andabo, he aided in the creation of the sound that has defined rumba since the 1980’s in Cuba and all around the world. The evolution of Guarapachangeo incorporating Bata and the once archaic cajón into modern rumba is the legacy of the late Pancho Quinto (founder of Yoruba Andabo).

Abdias Ernesto Garcia is a folk experimentalist from Puerto Rico who adorns his roots as a percussionist with a sensibility for poetry and culture. Combining different genres into one cohesive package, Abdias fuses magnetic and hypnotizing soulful grooves, mesmerizing vocals that create a lushful landscape of multi-cultural sounds. He has understood and spoken the universal language of music since the tender age of 2 when he began playing percussion on his grandma's pots and pans. Abdias has been living in the experiment of life and music from the days of his youth when his uncles introduced him to some of the greatest musical concoctions in their 78 Vinyl records to currently producing albums for performing artists in his Orlando, Florida Studio, Abdias has soundly embraced music as a part of himself in his lifelong journey. Abdias began to build his artistry from scratch through winning talent shows and international competitions including Sabado Gigante & Juventud Vibra, studying at La Escuela Libre de Puerto Rico as he trained and played with the likes of Tito Puente & Giovanni Hidalgo, also performing in concert halls with Awilda Carbia (a prominent Puerto Rican Comedian), working alongside musical director Tito Curet Alonso, performing with El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, and playing on stage with Willie Colon. Abdias’ latest release entitled “Mas Colores y Menos Horrores” (More Colors and Less Horrors) presents ten new original songs that highlight his personal growth as he continues to explore the experimental acoustic sound that has become a trademark for the passionate songwriter. He approaches this album with elegance and simplicity that allows the listener to become a part of the conversation not just a listener. Now touring with his wife and two sons throughout the United States and the Caribbean performing and offering workshops on drumming and improvisation.
