Canine Commandos is a unique community/service learning experience. Their dream is for the Commandos to be in every school, in every shelter, in every community.
Many dogs are overlooked for adoption in shelters due to lack of training. The public bypasses dogs that are jumping and barking; untrained. The Canine Commandos (300 students, 18 schools) rotate on a daily basis to provide consistent training to help these dogs get a second chance at a new home.
Virginia Hamilton is a teacher and lives in a community where two shelters are high kill due to untrained behaviors. To improve the adoption rates, the students created Canine Commandos to teach basic obedience and help these dogs get a second chance. This program teaches the students to care about the animals, their community, and their self-confidence which leads to caring about their academics to make successful gains. Canine Commandos, now in its 13th year, provides a unique opportunity from at-risk students to gifted training in three shelters. The students turn community service into service-learning by choosing projects to reflect upon their experiences in their academic subjects where they showcase and celebrate at an Expo at the end of each school year.
Questions Judy will ask:
1. Why was the project started?
2. How do the animals and students benefit?
3. What are the costs?
4. Can you provide the number of animlas trained and the success rate?
5. Has the program been acknowleged?
6. If the public wanted to help (donate funds), how would they do this?

After gaining her marketing degree at Georgia State University, Cindy moved into corporation management. In 2009, instinct told her it was time for change. With her skill set, she knew she had the capacity to achieve something meaningful, and to make a difference doing something she truly loved. But who and what?
The answer was lying at the foot of the bed.
Zoe, her then 10-year-old German Shepherd had allergies to bovine products of any kind. Following a hunch, Cindy discovered naturally shed elk antlers. Not only were they tolerable for dogs like Zoe, they were actually a much healthier alternative. Cindy founded her own company in 2010 and named it after her beloved pets, Scout & Zoe.
Scout & Zoe's Natural Antler Dog Chews and Treats are available at 2000 store globally. Her products have been well-received and have earned stellar reviews from prestigious news outlets nationally.
It's a dog's life, and Cindy wouldn't have it any other way.
1)Why animal nutrition? What was the tipping point that made you realize this was an area that needed attention?
2)Are there any trends the industry is following regarding nutrition?
3)What makes Scout & Zoe's treats such a great alternative to products already on the market today? What is your secret sauce?
4)If most of the foods and treats available on the market today are so bad for our furry pals, why do large, well-known companies keep producing these products?
5)What can a pet parent do to help improve their dog's diet if they are on a budget?
6)What plans do you have for the future with regards to Scout & Zoe's?

African-Americans have dietary preferences born from cultural influences and necessity. The preference for a particular type of cuisine called soul food has resulted in various health problems for African-Americans. Soul food typically involves fried foods and lots of fatty meats prepared with rich gravies. African-Americans associate these foods with social interactions and also with their history of slavery. Therefore any efforts to get them to eat other types of healthier foods are met with resistance and are seen as trying to eradicate Black culture. Different sources have shown that it is still possible to eat the foods associated with soul food in a healthier way so that African-Americans can overcome their high rates of obesity and cardiovascular disease. How do we take care of our health problems? Should we follow Dr.Sebi? Should we cut out meat? Tune in and lets discuss Black Health

Join us as we learn why clinical trials for dogs and people are the most promising path to treating and ultimately curing cancers, when we talk with Colorado State University's Dr. Christine Hardy, DVM.
In her role as senior director of Professional Veterinary Medicine Student Services and former director of Operations for CSU's Flint Animal Cancer Center, Dr. Hardy is getting the word out about "One Cure," an initiative to share the importance of participating in clinical trials when animals and humans are diagnosed with cancer.
Also joining us is Dr. Kristen Weishaar, a board-certified oncologist and the Flint Animal Cancer Center's Director of Clinical Trials. Dr. Weishaar earned her DVM from Tufts University in Massachusetts and became board-certified at Colorado State in 2014. Dr. Weishaar is excited to play a role in finding new treatments for animals and people with cancer through clinical research.
We will Learn:
- What exactly are clinical trials?
