On Today’s episode of Mixed Race Radio we will meet Professor Robert Chao Romero, the son of a Mexican father from Chihuahua and a Chinese immigrant mother from Hubei in central China. Dr. Romero is an Associate Professor at UCLA’s Chavez Department of Chicana/o Studies and Department of Asian American Studies. He considers himself fortunate to be able to study himself for a living and he allows his dual cultural heritage to serve as the basis for his academic studies. His research examines Asian immigration to Latin America, as well as the large population of “Asian-Latinos” in the United States. He is also interested in the role played by religion in social activism. His first book, The Chinese in Mexico, 1882-1940 (2010), tells the forgotten history of the Chinese community in Mexico and it received a Latino-Studies-Section-Book-Award from the Latin American Studies Association. Romero received his J. D. from UC Berkeley and his Ph.D. in Latin American history from UCLA. When he is not a professor, he is a pastor and director of Christian Students of Conscience, an organization which trains and mobilizes students in issues of race and social justice from a faith-based perspective. He is also the author of Jesus for Revolutionaries: An Introduction to Race, Social Justice, and Christianity (October 2013).

John Clifford, is an American taking a two year Diploma in Peforming Arts (Cantonese Opera) at the Academy. Clifford was a year short of graduating Boston College with a degree in Asian Studies when he decided to come to the Academy to pursue his dream of becoming a Cantonese opera accompanist.
At age 12, Clifford developed a great interest in the erhu, a Chinese string instrument. He learned Chinese music by first learning the Chinese language and is now conversant in Putonghua (Mardarin), Cantonese and Toisanese. During the last ten years, he has continued to learn both online and by spending time at Cantonese opera studios in Boston’s Chinatown. Today, he plays more than eight musical instruments.
Clifford hopes that one day he will be a concertmaster, teacher and eventually a publisher of books on Cantonese opera music, thus helping preserve this ancient tradition.

The Kaifeng Jews are members of a small Jewish community in Kaifeng, in the Henan province of China who have assimilated into Chinese society while preserving some Jewish traditions and customs. Their origin in Kaifeng is a matter of debate.. Kaifeng, then the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty, was a cosmopolitan city on a branch of the Silk Road. It is surmised that a small community of Jews, most likely from Persia or India, arrived either overland or by a sea route, and settled in the city. In 1163 they built a synagogue surrounded by a study hall, a ritual bath, a communal kitchen, a kosher butchering facility, and a sukkah. The synagogue, known as Temple of Purity and Goodness, was destroyed by fire and floods, and restored several times. After an 1852 flood it remained in ruins. It is difficult to estimate the number of Jews in China. The last census revealed about 400 official Jews in Kaifeng, now estimated at some 100 families totaling approximately 500 people. Up to 1,000 residents have ties to Jewish ancestry, though only 40 to 50 individuals partake in Jewish activities. Some descendants of Kaifeng's Jewish community say their parents and grandparents told them that they were Jewish and would one day "return to their land," others are only vaguely aware of their ancestry. Kaifeng Jews intermarried with local Chinese, and are thus indistinguishable in appearance from their non-Jewish neighbors. The one trait that differentiated them from their neighbors was not eating pork. After contact with Jewish tourists, some have reconnected to mainstream Jewry.

Lorraine Huang, Artist, Author, Teacher/Healer joins Tall Paul as she shares with us her insights from her book, "The Woman Radical - How the Chinese Language Defines Women."
"Lorraine Huang, scholar, has created not only a major contribution to feminist Chinese calligraphic history, but an art piece as well... Her illustrations, inked on a variety of papers, and interpretive text demonstrate not only the early linkage between the feminine divine and the domestic female, but its denigration when used for patriarchal dominance. Her book will facinate linguists, inform historians, and delight any woman who reads it." - Deborah Ann Light
