SEARCHER'S ROAD MAP WITH GUEST KATHERINE WHITE

    in Spirituality

KATHERINE WHITE  HAS always loved gardening and always had a large garden, both flowers and vegetables. Before I retired I had begun to research medicinal plants, and had planted several in my yard. After retirement I began my studies in earnest. I have studied several years with Beverly McFarland, a local herbalist who teaches here on our mountain, about how to identify and use as medicine the plants that grow locally. I have received certificates for her apprenticeship program. I have also received a certificate for Dr. Tieraona Low Dog's program 'Foundations in Herbal Medicine'. I have studied with Rosemary Gladstar, and twice gone for a weeklong program of herbal and spiritual study to Cuernavaca, Mexico at CEDEHC. I consider myself an herbalist, and a continuing student of herbal medicine. I grow many of the plants that I use in my medicines, and I feel my personal relationship with my garden and these plants enhances the power of the medicine. I have given many presentations on medicinal herbs and medicine making.

I am an Elder in Kalpulli Teocalli Ollin, and have been with Maestra Laura for 7 yrs. both as apprentice and healer. (a kalpulli is a community, in this case , of healers who work in the traditional style of Mexico) I lead ceremonies and rituals, do spiritual cleansings, platicas (heart to heart talks), herbal consultations, and facilitate the temazcal (Mexican style sweatlodge). I am also a Reiki practitioner and do chakra balancing work.

For several years I have pursued independent study of ancient Celtic spiritualism and traditions, and conduct private ceremonies in the Celtic tradition.

I am also a published poet and a multi-media artist.

PWN 2015.6.4: Love & Marriage constitutional style

    in News

It is June 26th, an important date in the history of the United States and the history of the LGBTQ rights movement. Three times on June 26th the Supreme Court of the United States has maded a ruling that has deeply effected the progress of that movement. In 2003 SCOTUS made a ruling that introduced the idea of "sexual privacy" as a constitutional issue. In 2013 SCOTUS overturned DOMA S3. And this year, SCOTUS rules in favor of marriage equality nation wide.

RevKess and KaliSara are both ordained ministers recognized by the State of Nebraska and elsewhere. They have been eagerly anticipating a favorable ruling from SCOTUS so that they can offer their services to gay and lesbian couples who wish to be legally bound in matrimony. As Pagans and supporters (or members) of the LGBTQ community both have been willing, ready, and able to perform non-legal ceremonies for their LGBTQ friens, family, or clients who have sought them out for such services. With this decision from SCOTUS hundreds, if not thousands, of Pagan clergy nationwide can now offer those services to those who seek them and for those weddings/marriages to be legally and fully recognized by the United States federal government and the individual states' governments.

The fight for LGBTQ rights if far from over. Some politicians are moving to take steps to protect their constituents from the "evil" of same-sex marriage. Tune in to this edition of PWN to learn more about the SCOTUS ruling and some of the politicians, pundits, and "religious zealots" who are still fighting against the tide of progess in the United States.

    Deepertruth: Drums Among The Mohawks

    in Religion

St. John La Lande was only 18 years old when he joined French Jesuit missionary, Father Isaac Jogues to go to the land of the Mohawks. As a young boy, St. John had been captivated by the heroine stories told of Father Jogues.

Father Jogues shared his tales and experiences of being a missionary among the Mohawks, bringing Christ and the gospel message to the people of the New World.

St. John’s enthusiasm to do God’s work was recognized by all who knew him, he spoke of the exploits of the missionaries who gave their lives as martyrs in Indian Territory and longed to go there.

Father Jogues originally arrived in North America for the first time in 1636 where he landed off the shore of Quebec. Father Jogues told his companion, Rene Goupil, “A century ago a Norman sea captain gave this place its name. He was on a ship here in the harbor, just as we are—only his ship was carrying the first white men to come up the Saint Lawrence River. When he saw the cliff there, the captain of that little ship was amazed. He cried out in his rough farmer’s French, ‘Que bec’ meaning ‘what a rock”.

The dangers among the Mohawks were well known. The Indians there were animist in their religious practice. They were polytheistic believing in many gods. Much of their rituals and ceremonies were superstitious.
