    About Katherine:

Katherine Flannery Dering, author of Shot in the Head: A Sister’s Memoir, A Brother’s Struggle (Bridgeross Communications; 2014) is the second of ten children. Her younger brother, Paul, was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 16. Busy with her own family and career, she helped with his care only intermittently for many years, but took on a more intense role after her parents death and especially after he developed physical ailments, as well as the psychological ones. She found herself very moved by the experience and writes about caring for her brother in hopes that it will enlighten the public on the role of caregivers. Katherine holds an MFA from Manhattanville College, a BA from Le Moyne College, an MA from the University of Buffalo and a MBA from the University of Minnesota at Duluth. Her poetry and essays have appeared in Inkwell Magazine, as well as The Bedford Record Review, Northwords Press, Sensations Magazine, Pandaloon Press, Poetry Motel and Pink Elephant Magazine. A narrative non-fiction piece, which later became a chapter of Shot in the Head, was included in Stories from the Couch, an anthology of essays about coping with mental illness. Dering taught Spanish briefly and is a former CFO at a community bank in New York. She currently serves on the board of directors of a startup bank and actively volunteers with the League of Women Voters and the Northern Westchester Community Center. in Religion

     Female Solution w/ Naimah Latif

Trust. It's a major component to marriage success. One of he biggest conflicts couples have is over money and whether their spouses can be trusted to stay within an agreed upon budget, not overspend on frivolous things, be responsible for paying debts, and not plunge the family into ruin. Today we'll look at a couple who is struggling with issues of trust regarding their combined income. How do we decide who should be the money manager in the family? How do you recognize when money management is not your strong point? Is the person who makes the most money automatically the "boss" in the marriage?

MMSRS #26 - Looming Budget Cuts, will they hurt you?

    in Military

Host Dave Etter opens the lines up to the military male spouse to discuss/argue/rant concerning the upcoming congressional budget cuts and what we can do about them. Probably going to get heated, so, put on your cussword shield, things look rough today!  (516) 453-9167 to call in and play!

MMSRS is a weekly 2-hour web-based radio show, hosted by Dave Etter, focusing on the needs of men married to serving military members, both men and women. Male Military Spouses are a small niche of military spouses, comprising of only 7%-8% of all military spouses. We feel left out, usually, at support functions - especially those designed with the spouses being identified as "wives"! We get cajoled at playgrounds where our kids play, from the mommies there who think we don't belong. We are proud SAHDs, who gave up our careers to follow our spouses as they dedicate thier lives to defend our country! Here, on this show, we come together and share beer recipes, diaper changing techniques, financial discoveries - manly things, for men! Airs Fridays at Noon CT, rated R for the cussing that can occur, and available for download (podcast) immediately following each show if requested.
