Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs James Kirkland Recap with Kelsey McCarson

    in Sports

Did we need that, or did we NEED that? Following a monumental letdown of a megafight in Mayweather-Pacquiao, boxing fans needed a nice weekend of boxing to recharge, and we got it. There were negatives to focus on -- like another fantastically inept failure by Texas referee Laurence Cole -- but it was mostly fun. This week on the newly-reworked Top Men Boxing Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and boxing writer/historian Patrick Connor welcome back to the show Kelsey McCarson of Bleacher Report, The Sweet Science and The Boxing Channel. The topics? All things boxing. But more specifically, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's destruction of James Kirkland, a recap of the #PBConCBS card that featured Omar Figueroa vs Ricky Burns and Jamie McDonnell vs Tomoki Kameda, and a preview of the upcoming HBO card featuring Gennady Golovkin vs Willie Monroe Jr and Roman Gonzalez vs Edgar Sosa. That's a lot of good stuff. Don't miss it. Thanks for tuning in!

Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. James Kirkland Official

    in Sports

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya said Friday he has signed agreements from former light-middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and heavy-punching James Kirkland to fight each other in May on HBO. De La Hoya told the Times in a telephone interview from Alvarez’s home in San Diego that the date and site -- either San Antonio’s Alamodome or a venue in Las Vegas -- will be finalized soon. Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 knockouts) had a deadline one or two weekends ago that middleweight world champion Miguel Cotto let pass without agreeing to a deal. Cotto is believed to be waiting in case Floyd Mayweather Jr. opts not to fight Manny Pacquiao on May 2. We will with out a shadow of a doubt be taking live calls on air from you the voice of the people. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs Erislandy Lara Recap

    in Sports

So "Canelo" Alvarez's split decision win over Erislandy Lara wasn't face-melting action. Was it even a win? What does Canelo do next? Did Lara really run all night? Did a robbery take place? Does Canelo's carpet match his drapes??? ...we're asking from an interior design perspective. Bad Left Hook's James Foley and Patrick Connor of Queensberry Rules will answer all of these questions and more, as they recap the entire PPV, including Abner Mares' tedious win over Jonathan Oquendo, Francisco Vargas' huge victory over JuanMa Lopez and Mauricio Herrera's fun one with Johan Perez. Oh yeah, and Jeff Lacy :( And up for next weekend, another show from Macau featuring Zou Shiming that includes Guillermo RIgondeax, Rex Tso, Gilberto Sanchez and Brian Viloria. Thanks for tuning in!

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs Erislandy Lara Preview

    in Sports

As surprisingly good as fights have been lately, we can only replay them so many times. We're boxing fans. We need to be constantly entertained, or we get pissy. Luckily we're kind of being thrown a bone this coming weekend with a high level match up in Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara. It's the type of bout that, on paper at least, is excllenet in just about every aspect. But don't worry. Bad Left Hook's James Foley and Patrick Connor of Queensberry Rules will find things to complain about -- like a weak undercard and the fact that it's on Pay-Per-View. Or perhaps that Ruslan Chagaev holds a heavyweight "belt" again. Who knows? Either way, thanks for tuning in!

Canelo vs Kirkland: Canelo Wins the War Against Kirkland with 3rd Round KO

    in Sports

It was the fight that actually lived up to its build as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez squared off against James Kirkland on HBO in front of a pro-Canelo crowd at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

It was one of the best opening rounds in the last few years as both Kirkland and Canelo landed hard shots that counted for both guys. Kirkland started off the fight with bad intentions, and he walked Canelo back into the corner and started letting his hands go. He was tagging Canelo, who couldn’t seem to get out of the corner, and even when Canelo was able to get out of the corner Kirkland would just chase him down with a punch first mentality.
