Shane Claiborne graduated from Eastern University and did graduate work at Princeton Seminary. In 2010, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Eastern. His adventures have taken him from the streets of Calcutta where he worked with Mother Teresa to the wealthy suburbs of Chicago where he served at the influential mega-church Willow Creek. As a peacemaker, his journeys have taken him to some of the most troubled regions of the world – from Rwanda to the West Bank – and he’s been on peace delegations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Shane is a founder and board member of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia that has helped birth and connect radical faith communities around the world. He is married to Katie Jo, a North Carolina girl who also fell in love with the city (and with Shane). They were wed in St. Edwards church, the formerly abandoned cathedral into which homeless families relocated in 1995, launching the beginning of the Simple Way community and a new phase of faith-based justice making.
Shane writes and travels extensively speaking about peacemaking, social justice, and Jesus.
His work has appeared in Esquire, SPIN, Christianity Today, and The Wall Street Journal, and he has been on everything from Fox News and Al Jazeera to CNN and NPR. He’s given academic lectures at Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Liberty, Duke, and Notre Dame.

In this episode, Sacerdotus speaks on a video with a round table discussion featuring Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris and the late Christopher Hitchens. These men are described as the "Four Horsemen of Atheism."
In the video, the atheists speak on religion, God and their views regarding them. They begin the discussion by claiming that religious people do not like to have their beliefs criticized. Moreover, they discuss the idea that an atheistic approach to religious ideas is interpreted as rude or offensive.
Sacerdotus speaks on this video and criticizes the opinions of the "four horsemen" by showing how their poor choice of words and lack of how to engage people is what causes offense to others. He also points out the ignorance and misconceptions made by the atheist men and offers a rebuttal.
Kindness is its own Brilliance. When you engage in it either giving or receiving it lifts your spirits and emblazes your soul in...Brilliance! Accordign to Aesop "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
Imagine if you chose to do just 1 small act of kindness where it might lead. For example if you see someone who looks a little down and you offer them a single flower, or a candy bar, a free cup of tea or coffee, what that might do to help turn their day around! Maybe you could just draw a stick person hugging another stick person with a heart next to them...you could tell them it is a hug they use anytime over and over! How would you feel knowing that you did something you didn't have to, while expecting absolutely NOTHING in return...how would that make you feel in your heart!
Maybe, engaging in kindess does more for you than the target of your actions....Now imagine doing 5, 10, 20 and more acts of kindess every month, each week or every day!
Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) is a beautiful movement that keeps infusing humanity globally. You do not have to know someone's language, religion, background, politics, or gender to engage in it; the benefits abound for all involved!
Here's a video of a company that uses their product to help you practice acts of kindness: Striiv's Vision for Fitness Video
Suggestsions for Acts of Kindess:
Walk a neighbors' dog
Invite a neighbor to carpool to the grocery store
Give your seat to a person standing on the bus
Bake some cookies and deliver them to your neighbors with a card that says "Have a sweet Day!"
Take the neighbors trash can to the curb along with yours
Join us for the Brilliance of Kindness and start creating more joy in your life!
In this episode, blogger Sacerdotus speaks on the attacks made by the late Christopher Hitchens in his book "Missionary Position." Sacerdotus gives a brief summary of the book and refutes the claims Hitchens make against Blessed Mother Teresa. Hitchens claimed the Mother Teresa was a fraud who had a free ride from the press as the Catholic Church "painted" her as this saintly woman. He wrote in his book about the supposed poor conditions at hospices where Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity take care of the poor and claimed that Mother Teresa promoted poverty and suffering. Hitchens was ignorant of Catholic Church teaching regarding Redemptive Suffering and often misrepresented quotes made by Mother Teresa in regards to suffering being a "beautiful thing." Sacerdotus refutes the claims made by Christopher Hitchens showing them to be nothing but bunk feuled by bigotry and ignorance which are typical of so-called "new atheists. Sacerdotus also addresses a poorly done research study done by the university of Ottawa which defames Mother Teresa using Hitchens' book as a source.
Join me this Saturday, 5/10/2014, as I interview Mary Poplin discussing her book "Is Reality Secular?"
"Dr. Mary Poplin is professor of education at Claremont Graduate University where she teaches courses on learning and pedagogical theories, philosophy and education, and qualitative research. She is a frequent speaker in academic and religious forums. She has been both founder and director of the current Master’s teacher education program and dean. Her most recent research is a five-year study of high-performing teachers in low-performing urban schools in some of the poorest neighborhoods in LA. Her book, Finding Calcutta, is about her experience volunteering with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity. Her more recent book, Is Reality Secular, is a reflection and analysis of four global worldviews, their principles, their similarities and differences with the Christian worldview and their consequences on lives, nations and cultures."
In the book, Poplin looks at four different worldviews and asks how each of them explains reality looking at the fundamental question of why we should think reality is secular. This will also include looking at how she came to the worldview that she has while working at Claremont.
