According to Wine Enthusiast magazine, in 2014 New York State ranked as the third most important wine-growing region in the US, after California and Washington state.
In this Interview, Rachel Bovard, a fellow upstate New Yorker and part-time employee at DCANTER, will share her impressions of the wines of the Finger Lakes. She is a Level 1 Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers and a Diploma Candidate in the Wine and Spirits Educators Trust (the pre-requisite for Master of Wine). During the discussion Rachel will make the case for cool climate grapes, stating that lighter tasting wines should merit no less consideration than warm climate wines in California and France.
Some of the wines and wineries she will touch on include a Cabernet Franc from Ravines Wine Cellars on Seneca Lake, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Casa Larga south of Lake Ontario, and a dry Gewurtztraminer from Herman J Wiemer. Others include a Cabernet Franc made from Finger Lakes grapes at the Oenology Winery in Brooklyn.
We will also note some of the tourist attractions in the area and the Finger Lakes Wine Festival July 10-12 where you can taste these wines for yourself! A good reference for the show is Evan Dawson's book on the region, "Summer in a Glass".

If a Good Humor-like ice-cream truck is the last thing you’d expect to see at a wedding reception—particularly one toting wine-flavored treats—you’re in for a big surprise. “We drive up with the old-school music playing right out of the truck, and it just lights up the crowd. They’re turning around trying to figure out where it’s coming from,” Felecia Hatcher of Feverish Ice Cream tells I Do Radio host Angela Chester. “What’s unique about our ice-cream truck is all the different selections that brides and gooms have for their event. We did a themed wedding last year and we had wine ice cream, Japanese mochi balls, we do vegan-friendly ice cream as well. The wine ice cream has been around just for few years, and there are flavors like peach Zinfandel, port, chocolate cabernet and a cherry chardonnay.”

At 49, Sandra Tsing Loh’s life exploded: She scurried off with eight women to the decadent Burning Man festival and fell into bed with her business partner, “Mr. Y,” divorced her husband and became a crazy person.
All this, she writes in a new memoir, “The Madwoman in the Volvo: My Year of Raging Hormones,” because she had entered menopause.
“It’s like you lived on earth, and then you went to the moon, and lived there for a while,” Ms. Loh said. “Now you’re back where you started” — the hormone levels of a preadolescent — “and it’s, like, ‘Welcome home.’ ”

Sauce the way your grandma made it! About a year ago, Matt Gallira founded The Atlantic Ave Co., an artisanal sauce company. All products share hand-crafted qualities: small batch sauces start with fresh herb-infused organic extra virgin olive oil, San Marzano tomatoes, Cabernet Sauvignon, and carefully sourced ingredients like hand-made Pancetta and imported Porcini mushrooms. After quitting his job as a financial services recruit in Boston, Matt came home to NJ to make sauce. “... I guess one day I got enough compliments from it that I thought maybe I could do this professionally.” He began by selling gift baskets and jars on Black Friday at the Garden State Plaza Mall. Matt says the problem with sauce in grocery stores is their industrial production. Companies mass produce sauce by passing very hot steam through the ingredients instead of cooking them. But the difficulties of giving artisanal care to large amounts of sauce are apparent. “At a certain point this sauce needs to slow cook for two and a half hours. That’s why no one makes it this way… it’s hard to scale up.” This is the 2nd of a 3-part series on food entrepreneurs. “What do you need to start a business? Three simple things: know your product better than anyone, know your customer, and have a burning desire to succeed,” said Dave Thomas, Founder of Wendy’s. An entrepreneur is someone who sees an opportunity, sizes up its value, and finds the resources to make it work. Entrepreneurs are typically innovators introducing something new to the marketplace, putting a different spin on a product – and willing to take a risk for their success. Join hosts Linda Rez and William Pollard (Wild 4 Washington Wine) for a conversation with the Gilles Nicault, Director of Winemaking for Long Shadows Vintners, a winery that brings together the Rock Stars of winemaking for all the major worldwide wine regions. He is also the winemaker for Long Shadows' acclaimed Chester-Kidder, a Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah blend.
Gilles grew up in southern France and graduated from the University of Avignon with a degree in viticulture and enology. He honed his craft in the fabled hillside vineyards and wineries of Cotes du Rhone, Provence and Champagne. In 1994, already a vintner of rising fame in his homeland, Gilles traveled to Washington State to expand his winemaking.
Impressed by Washington State's vineyards, he stayed in the Columbia Valley, working for Staton Hills and Hogue Cellars before joining Woodward Canyon in 1996, where he stayed until moving to Long Shadows in June 2003. Sharing Woodward Canyon's passion for world-class wines, Gilles soon found Woodward Canyon's founder Rick Small was his ideal mentor and biggest champion. In 1999, Woodward Canyon named Gilles head of enology and production.
Gilles is married to French-born winemaker Marie-Eve Gilla of Forgeron Cellars, an upcoming guest on the Wine Muse show, "The Rise, Fall, and Rise of Chardonnay".

And since Charles just finished a book entitled the “Original Grands Crus of Burgundy” – it’s hard to imagine that even the most experienced wine connoisseur won’t learn something too!
