1982: Oregon businessman Phil Champagne, age 52, dies in a tragic boating accident off Lopez Island. He is survived by one ex-wife, four adult children, an octogenarian mother, and two despondent brothers. Phil didn't know he was dead until he read it in the paper. All things considered, he took it rather well. So did Phil's brother, Mitch, the beneficiary of a 1.5 million dollar policy on Phil's life. 1992: Washington restauranteur Harold Stegeman, famous for his thick, juicy steaks, is arrested by the Secret Service for printing counterfeit United States currency in an Idaho shed. In addition to the bogus bills, Stegeman also has a fraudulently obtained passport, a fabricated Cayman Island drivers license, and Phil Champagne's fingerprints. When the uproarious reality of Harold Stegeman's secret identity hit the headlines, the counterfeit resurrection of Phil Champagne became one of the most celebrated and hysterically funny true-crime stories of the twentieth century. And while every supermarket tabloid and television talk show hounded after the untold story, only Edgar Award winner Burl Barer captured Champagne's confidence and received permission to detail Phil's post-mortem career of fraud, deception, trickery, lies, and fine prime rib, bringing to life the exploits of a man his family thought dead over a decade ago. MAN OVERBOARD-The Counterfeit Resurrection of Phil Champagne-Burl Barer

If you haven’t yet read Sophia’s Web, here are some quotations you can talk about:
“Each human being is one among many diverse manifestations of God/Nature.”
“We who live today have the opportunity to tear down the Berlin Wall separating us from Nature and one another.”
“The world we live in, for all her imperfections and contradictions, is our uni-versity”
“We need a paradigm shift from Scarcity which necessitates violence to Abundance that invites peace.”
“Our choice in this day and age is to divide and conquer or to unite and prosper.”
NYU graduiate and publishing wunderkind Daniel Genis had a bright future behind him when they carted him off to prison for serial mugging and consisten stupidity. Hey, he became addicted to Heroin -- that famed wonder drug originally promoted as a non-habit forming treatment for cough and diareah now known as exceptionally addicting -- but you don't caugh, and you can't poop no matter how hard you try.
A devout athiest who doesn't keep Kosher, Daniel is now ruling the universe of expert commentary. When ever the media wants 60 seconds of authoratative, concise insights from a devout athiest who doesn't keep kosher, who do you think they call? Guess again. They call Daniel Genis
When a German magazine wants to kiss and make up for all that stuff on the History Channel, who do they have write their cover story? No, wrong again -- it's Daniel Genis
When legendary broadcaster and Edgar Award winning author Burl Barer wants to share time and space with a vastly amusing literary co-hort with a marked affinity for ITC television productions from the 1960's, who does he call? No, wrong again -- it's Daniel Genis.
Listen now as Burl politely grills Daniel like a swordfish. (Ed note: while this statement is grammatically incorrect, and should be written as "grills Daniel as if Daniel were a swordfish," the idiomatic humor is lost in the oppression of gramatical correctness)

When Jerry Heimann's son arrived at his father's home in Everett, Washington, he found his grandmother, an Alzheimer's patient, alone in the house, starving and dehydrated. His father was missing. The furniture was gone. Within hours, police realised that Jerry's live-in housekeeper, Barbara Opel, had robbed him and fled. But where was Jerry? The next morning, Opel's 11-year-old son led police to Jerry's body. Soon, stunned detectives were getting confessions from a rage tag group of teens and pre-teens. At Barbara Opel's command, they had set upon Jerry Heimann with knives, fists, and baseball bats - and battered him to death. From 13-year-old Heather, who frantically stabbed Jerry after having sex with her boyfriend, to 7-year-old Tiffany, who helped clean up the blood, this is the horrifying true story of how a mother turned her children and their friends into stone cold killers - and then rewarded them for their crime...MOM SAID KILL-Burl Barer
