The will to build...were has it gone?

    in Podcasting

Over the years we have become a society or culture of the "instant gratification" we no longer want to take the time to build greatness, instead spend massive amounts of money to try to avoid it. Specifically in sports, the days of "Building a winner" is out the door and to putting things togther and hoping it works has become the norm. The pride should me be from building, not aquiring. Great things that are built tend to stay together and strive. Can we get the will to build again?

She has worked as a medical researcher at Duke University, University of North Carolina and University of California, Berkeley. Her research scholarship has been in many diverse medical fields, including orthopedics, functional GI, breast cancer, craniofacial genomics and community psychiatry. Aruna cares for female literacy, education of slum children, elderly with Alzheimer's, young adults with learning disability and emancipation of school dropout teenagers. She believes that true change can happen when one immerses oneself in the community and empathizes with others' minds. Aruna lives with her husband and toddler daughter in Chapel Hill, NC. She enjoys watching basketball, American football and more recently, golf. She has an avid ear for music of all hues and likes lap swimming. DIYA is Aruna's first book.

Using skills of in-depth analyses, cogency, candor and humor, author Aruna Gurumurthy has delivered her observations and reflections of every day and every year happenings, the past, the present, the future and everything in between.

DIYA is a dream and a beacon. It aspires to bring character and organization to people’s thoughts and actions. It wishes to see a world where we interact with each other in a suave and friendly manner without feeling the need for heated emotional egress. Wouldn't we love to live in a world where people are accountable for their words and actions without causing harm to others?

The Potential of Music Festivals to Build Community

    in Non-Profit

When Gallup and the Knight Foundation set out to answer the question “What attaches people to their communities?” they found that the key reasons cited by residents for loving their cities were entertainment and social offerings, how welcoming the city is and its aesthetics — in other words, the arts and culture.  That finding was not news to Alderman Michael Scott, Jr., or his wife Natashee.  The couple have been patrons of the arts for years.  In an effort to build community and make North Lawndale a destination for arts and entertainment, the Scotts started the annual Westside Musical Festival, which will run again on August 20 2016.

Join Natashee and Michael Scott, Jr. as they share lessons learned in developing the festival. We will discuss ways the Westside Music Festival is being used to build community; develop a sense of place for North Lawndale and to spur economic development and tourism.
