On the next edition of Fiber Hooligan (03/03/14) my guest will be designer, teacher, and now author Brooke Nico.
Brooke began her designing activities by sewing her own wardrobe, inspired by drape and color. She brought her talents to knitting almost 10 years ago, first exploring modular construct, then lace. In 2006 Brooke became part owner of Kirkwood Knittery in St. Louis, MO.
Brooke got inspired by the intricacies and challenge of lace knitting in 2008. This is really where she has made her mark on the knitting world. She sees the patterns in small mathematical blocks & creates some of the most beautiful flowing garments in the field today. Her talent has been recognized by Vogue Knitting, Knitter’s Magazine, & Debbie Bliss magazines. She taught at the first VKLive event in New York City in 2011 and at VKLive L.A., as well as many STITCHES events.
Her first book, Lovely Knitted Lace (published by Lark) is being released as we speak. The sub-title of the book is ‘A Geometric Approach to Gorgeous Wearables’. I have a pre-release copy of her book and I have to tell you that it’s just beautiful.
Brooke is a lot of fun. She enjoys giving me a hard time, which should make for an interesting episode. I hope you’ll join us for this show.
Brooke is a twenty-one year old, 2013 Carolina Music Award nominee and 4-time Charlotte Music Award nominee.Brooke has written or co-written nearly 150 songs. When only a senior in high school, she received the honor of being a winner of the Wolf Radio’s Moment of Greatness Contest with her original song “Keep it in Drive.” She was soon presented many opportunities to play outside the state including being selected after performing at the Charlotte Music Awards in 2012 to compete in the Texaco Country Showdown in South Carolina backed by the radio station Interstate 107FM, and also playing on the WDVX Blue Plate Special radio show in Knoxville, TN.A self-described “Gypsy soul that will always remember where home is,” Brooke packed her bags in January of 2013 and headed to Nashville, transferring to Belmont University as a Music Business major. Within the first year of being in Nashville she had been in a Brad Paisley CMA Promo commercial, a Darius Rucker GAC special, and a featured extra on ABC’s “Nashville.” Most recently, in Spring 2014, Brooke graduated Cum Laude from Belmont University.
Since the time Brooke arrived in Nashville, she has been working with producer, C Kim Shrum, recording her debut EP “Songs About Carolina.” “Songs About Carolina” features 5 original songs in which Brooke is the sole writer. Having played over a hundred venues over the past four years ranging from writers rounds, acoustic shows, full band shows, and award ceremonies, Brooke is only getting started with her touring, and is planning a summer/fall tour upon the release of “Songs About Carolina.”
Having been nominated for 2013 Country Female in the Carolina Music Awards Co-Founded by Roberta Flack and Randy Travis and supported by Darius Rucker, momentum and support behind Brooke McBride and her brand of country music should only increase.

Jonatha Brooke, currently starring in My Mother Has 4 Noses at the Duke Theater in New York City joins host Robin Milling. Jonatha tells Robin her mother who had four prosthetic noses, ('one for each season,') due to skin cancer, inspired her to write the piece which is filled with tremendously uplifting stories told through song and monologues. It's a Kleenex box worth of tears but you will also laugh along with Jonatha as she relates her journey helping her mother through her declining dementia. In fact the show has inspired so many people to tell their story of sorrow and loss that Jonatha has set up a virtual memory wall on www.fournoses.org for people to share.
A singer, songwriter who toured concert halls for almost 25 years, Jonatha says she comes from a musical family where her father played trumpet and her mother 'played piano rather badly but was passionate about music.' The show is a 'mom and pop operation' produced by her manager/husband Patrick Rains. Jonatha performs select songs from the show including The Wind, How Far You Go For Love, and Scars.
Don't miss this show! It's a universal story where even celebrities can empathize. Edie Falco and Bill Irwin came to the show and cried, sharing their stories afterward with Jonatha. And sometimes she pretends Meryl Streep is sitting in the audience because, 'she's got a great nose and mom would've loved her nose!'
