In a culture that encourages and expects BUSY as a constant state of being, many have lost touch with how to STOP and truly rest.... even for a moment. In this episode we'll explore sacred stillness as a concept and delve into how my guest, Sonja Haller is experimenting with her own practice of sacred stillness in her blog project: 52 SABBATHS.
In her words, "I want to feel comfortable in my own skin. I want to feel more peace. I want to feel less anxiety. I’ve always wanted these things and one night I had a dream in which that small, wise voice told me to take a Sabbath. The voice was that of my editor who would blush if I told him I dreamed of him.
I took it as a sign.
Now whether this secular girl can find any of that in her experiment to experience 52 Sabbaths with all the dedication mustered in an overstuffed life remains to be seen. But I’m forecasting that at the very least I will have found a deeper connection with something, someone or myself.

Brighton Beach Avenue, the main street of community of Brighton Beach was a sea of people, young and old, weaving in and out of the hundreds of stories featuring various Jewish and Russian delicacies. A medley of Russian and Jewish music filtered out of the Russian coffeehouses that lined the streets which nurtured the aroma of hot bagels and knishes. It was 1933. The depression years were waning and the war was yet to come.
Sara Koza was an attractive 18-year-old with compelling deep brown eyes. Born of Russian immigrants in Harlem, her mother had died when she was 8-year-old of TB. Her father, Jack was forced to put her and her brother who was two years younger into an orphanage until he could establish a home for them. Jack met Frieda, a young nurse from Russia and they were married. Sara's father was a gifted musician and joined the Goldman band as the lead trumpeter. Sara and her brother, Sam, were taken out of the orphanage and reunited with their father and new stepmother. The Koza's, due to the father's talent flourished during the depression years and Sara had a new sister and brother to concern herself with as the oldest child. As she walked the streets of Brighton to the subway in 1933 she felt a sense of excitement which reflected in the blush that crossed her cheek and her buoyant stride. Solitication that would make a tele marketer blush; we didn't start like that but it has crept in unrelentlessly in our meetings. Rather than approaching our work through the study of literature, history, philosophy and science, we have replaced landmarks with things more familiar- marketing.
Are we an Order that talks without speaking; hears without listening; thinks without understanding. When did we replace the mentor and apprentice with merchant and customer? We try to take labour out of learning and craftsmenship. Not that it is wrong to use better means to accomplish a task but we have crossed a line that is costing us too much. The lessons have tasks performed to indirectly learn and understand patience and diligence. But we have removed the fingerboard from the violin so the student cannot practice the skills needed to achieve mastery of the Craft. We have handed out the answer sheet without teaching how to do the calculations for themselves.
One would think contemplation would be a comfortable part of masonry, but it isn't much a practice in our lodges. Isn't the focus always on management; business first, ritual second and education only when there is time, if at all.
How do we teach mind development without using time proven methods. Shakespeare wrote in the 16th century, work that is studied and admired around the world for showing people the capacity of mind and word to enrich the expression of human experience. Freemasonry embraces similar goals, with archane language, odd costume and unfamiliar sentence structure. It is a selective mind that notices messages in metaphores. Maybe we need to define ourselves as such and teach our students their talents will only be revealed through hard work and commitment.
...and by the way, I don't have any tickets to sell.
Please join C&G for a continuation of the Décor and Design series. This week they will be joined by one of the rising stars in the floral world, Blush Designs. Yena Jung and Jeeyun Lee of Blush will talk to us about what's like to be a relatively "new" florist in the NYC market. They will share with us their perspective on what has helped with their very fast rise. And of course we will talk design, what's new, what's hot, and most importantly what works!

Those who have listened to this show consistently or at the right times no doubt know how I feel about what's going on in our schools. It is a true spiritual, cultural, moral, and intellectual battleground for our kids. It's one that as Christians and as conservatives we're struggling to try to win with what is taught and many times who teaches there now. Today I'll have a story in which once again a school teacher has pretty much banned the bible, at least for now, from her classroom. At the same time, a New Hampshire school has assigned reading to their english class students that will make single, lonely adults blush. And you'll never believe what is going to happen at Harvard Monday night. On some of this stuff, the worm is turning and conservative, even social conservative ideals are gaining steam, and if there's time I'll mention that. But that's the show today at 4:30 Eastern time and archived later.
This week's show turns to Andre Gorz, and the analysis of how economic or commodifying reason corrosively reduces even the most intimate of human relationships to instrumental terms, turning attention especially to the notion of remunerating house or domestic work, a notion which, while seemingly benign at first blush, carries within it potentially damaging implications.
Radical Analysis aims to spelunk the questions that confront us, both as individuals and as a society. It is a forum for conversations that move beneath the surface to excavate the roots of those challenges. It is animated by that spirit of the Radical articulated so elegantly by Paulo Freire:
The radical, committed to human liberation, does not become the prisoner of a "circle of certainty" within which reality is also imprisoned. On the contrary, the more radical a person is, the more fully he or she enters into reality so that, knowing it better, he or she can better transform it. This individual is not afraid to confront, to listen, to see the world unveiled. This person is not afraid to meet the people or to enter into dialogue with them. This person does not consider himself or herself the proprietor of history or of all people, or the liberator of the oppressed; but he or she does commit himself or herself, within history, to fight at their side...
We are doing another question and answer session but with a bit of a discussion attached to them. I have invited my good friend and author of Blush, Melissa Maan to join me once again. We will be talking, laughing and having an honest open chat. So if you have any questions to ask, I would encourage you to send them in by 7pm so I can have a chance to get to them.
Remember, anything goes, I can't wait to see you all there!
