Children and athletes...one powerful bond. Everyone wants to be "like Mike", or jump like Kobe and LeBron. Our boys wake up daily, excited to wear the jerseys of their favorite athlete's teams, they stare at the televised games as if nothing else is on the programming list...watching every move their hero makes so they can follow in the athlete's footsteps. With the dedication and loyalty our children give to these athletes what else should we expect of our children when the athlete they aspire to reveals that they are gay, racist, or involved in criminal activity? Michael Sam is in the news for planting a televised kiss on his male lover in reaction to being drafted by the St. Louis Rams. The subsequent reactions, continuous news airings about the kiss and the reactions from others have been fore-fed to our children via uncensored television. Yet, athletes are not being held accountable to their social responsibility obligations. WIth the lax monitoring of content being aired in today's society, and our athletes becoming more bold in their shenanigans, have they become our oppressors biggest weapon of destruction to our youth?

“Like you, I have experienced fear, pain, great setbacks, disappointments, failures, and adversities. Life’s journey promises us all many unexpected surprises - both good and bad, however, regardless of all life’s events, we have control on how we manage our choices. When this happens, we don’t have to remain in a state of fear, pain, anxiety, or depression.” – Keith Mitchell
Tune in as Sister Jenna interviews Keith Mitchell.
NFL Star Athlete, Keith Mitchell #59, a former linebacker for the New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars, was at the top of his professional game when he ascended into the 2000 NFL Pro Bowl. Without warning, his football career suddenly ended after being confronted with a paralyzing spinal injury during a game, resulting in the agony of early retirement by the young age of 31.
Unwilling to surrender to the plague of emotional depression and physical defeat he often observed in many NFL peers facing similar trauma, he channeled his energy into the practice of yoga and meditation for healing. By great surprise, he discovered that these two daily practices not only helped him physically recover from his injury but created a refreshing sense of self-awareness and fulfillment which surpassed his love for football. Spearheaded by the media’s portrayal of African American men, it is believed by many, that most urban inner-city youth will be dead or in jail by twenty-five. Although cliché, with high school drop-out rates escalating and unemployment impacting minorities much more severely than other races, today’s urban youth who lack hope and direction, have embraced dying young or spending the rest of their lives in prison. Faced with some of the same challenges and growing up under the same conditions, how, then, did one grow up to be more than what society expected and predicted?
More afraid of being labeled “dumb,” than dying or going to prison, Chris, with book smarts, street smarts and common sense, earned both a Bachelors and Master’s Degree by the age of twenty-four, defying the odds and showing what is possible for all urban youth when they discover their purpose. Chris Sain Jr. the author of Dumb Athlete, an incredibly inspiring memoir, reveals his journey through the first twenty-four years of his life and what anyone can do to make it out and make a difference.

February 27, 2014: For female athletes, intense exercise and training can sometimes lead to a trio of distinct interrelated conditions known collectively as the Female Athlete Triad, or Triad for short, which can have immediate and lasting effects if untreated. It involves menstrual dysfunction, reduced bone mineral density, and energy deficiency related to disordered eating and insufficient nutrition.
In this episode of Move Forward Radio, Dr. Kelly Waicus, MD, CAQSM, and physical therapist Laura Stanley, PT, DPT, SCS, discuss how to identify, treat, and prevent the Triad.
The Triad sometimes goes unrecognized and untreated because symptoms can range from mild to severe, and because it is related to issues many female athletes may be unwilling to discuss: body image and menstrual abnormality.
