Join me as I speak with Alexis De Veaux: Author • Poet • Activist about her newest work of love, Yabo.
Alexis De Veaux was born and raised in Harlem, the product of two merging streams of black history in New York City-immigrants from the Caribbean on her mother’s side and migrants from North Carolina on her father’s side-who settled in Harlem in the early decades of the twentieth century. The second of eight children, that history was embedded in her mother’s view of life: “You got three strikes against you. You poor, you black, and you female.” But Alexis was drawn to the world of words and books and literature soon became the means by which she re-imagined the world her mother understood.
As an artist and lecturer she has traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Japan, and Europe. Alexis published a second award-winning children’s book, An Enchanted Hair Tale (1987) before moving to Buffalo; where she finished graduate school, earning a doctorate in American Studies, in 1992. A project nearly ten years in the making, her biography of Audre Lorde, Warrior Poet (2004) has been the recipient of several awards, including the Gustavus Meyers Outstanding Book Award (2004), the Lambda Literary Award for Biography (2004), the Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Award, Non-fiction (2005). Her work is available in English, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, and Serbo-Croatian.
With her new work, Yabo, Alexis has returned to her first love: writing fiction.

Hailing from the "birth place of jazz",Vandell Andrew's destiny was not too hard to find. Vandell started studying music at the age of 13 at a local jazz summer camp in the treme area of New Orleans. It was then that he learned to play the trumpet. After a whole summer of playing the trumpet, Vandell was approached by one of his teachers that his embouchure would be better suited playing the saxophone.
Being that this teacher was the COOLEST sax player in the world, Vandell took this ultimatum as a compliment that his teacher would be even considering teaching him. Soon after learning to play the alto saxophone, Vandell joined the infamous St.Augustine "Marching 100" band. Playing in events and parades all over the world, convinced Vandell that this was what he wanted to do for a living after high school. Following high school, Vandell enrolled in music classes at Southern University at New Orleans, and studied with the legendary Edward "Kidd" Jordan. Shortly after about a month of studying with Kidd, the horrible hurricane Katrina took the city of New Orleans by storm. Vandell found himself relocating to Dallas,Tx. This experience was extremely hard to cope with at first , but Vandell began to like living in Dallas a little more, after checking out the music scene around town. Vandell began writing and working on his own solo compositions. This has led to him sharing stages with many local acts,at many different venues .As well as nationally known acts like Kirk Whalum, and Tom Braxton. This is only the beginning for this young entrepreneur, he is soon to record his debut album in the very near future.
Join me and Andrew Selby(an aspiring language learner) as we talk about languages, and how the different language groups co-exist yet stay seperate. With any luck, I may even be able to help Andrew start learning his language!! We will cover a lot this episode, and hope you guys enjoy the ride as much as we do!

We were expecting to spend a few minutes with Andrew McCarthy to discuss his new book Faithless Execution: Building the Political Case for Obama's Impeachment, but apparently he wasn't in the loop regarding the interview that was confirmed with his publicist.
Instead, we had a typically unscripted Free For All Friday talking about anything that came to our minds, including politics, technology and, most importantly, what the Bible says.
Is there really a case for Barack Obama's impeachment? Former federal prosecutor and renowned author Andrew McCarthy reveals the true depths of Obama's high crimes and misdemeanors as explained in his new book "Faithless Execution: Building the Political Case for Obama's Impeachment." Impeachment, McCarthy says, is not a legal remedy but a political one. Even faced with proof of high crimes, Congress will not act to impeach without the will of the American people. And while the public increasingly recognizes the President's lawlessness, they have largely acquiesced to it, for political expedience or because they fear another Clinton impeachment fiasco.
