    Conney Williams is a Los Angeles based poet, actor and performance artist originally from  Shreveport, Louisiana where he worked as a radio personality. He has published two  poetry collections “Leaves of Spilled Spirit from an Untamed Poet (2002/2008)” and his latest, “Blues Red Soul Falsetto (2012).”  His  poetry has also been published in various publications and anthologies including  Voices from Leimert Park; America: At the End of the Day; and The Drumming  Between Us.He has appeared on stage and television. Conney  was the 3rd Place winner  in the Inner-City Culture Center acting competition in 1992. He has performed  his poetry on television, radio, galleries, universities, grade schools, coffee houses, and stages around Southern California and across the country;  including the Black Arts Festival.  He is a talented public speaker with  over 30 years of experience.He is a community activist and has worked  with youth for over 25 years. He is formerly an ordained minister and Youth  Pastor in the Church of God in Christ. He hosted a weekly cable television  bible study and also recorded a gospel rap CD called L.I.F.E (1985). He  is the Artistic Director at the World Stage in Leimert Park; and is a member  and current Coordinator for the Anansi Writers Workshop. This workshop at the  World Stage has produced some the most respected African American writers in the country. His has collaborated with artist Charles Bibbs on the production of WordArt; a monthly event of poetry, jazz, and visual art. He has hosted several poetry venues and been a  curator for many poetry/jazz events throughout Los Angeles. He has been the  Poet’s Stage Coordinator for the Leimert Park Book Fair for five of its  six-year existence.

    The consummate story teller: Phyllis Broom-Walker, B.A.;B.Ed; M.Ed.; retired educator & Art Enamellist has spent many years telling stories. As winner of: "Art in Public places in 1999, her largest "story" Out of Chaos - Order, honoring African-American inventor Garrett Morgan can be seen on permanent display in Toronto, Canada. Jamaican born and raised, Phyllis represented her adopted land Canada at the International Enamelling Convention in China. She passionately describes herself as "The Keeper of the Anansi Flame". Bra Anansi, a mythical hero figure from African is very well known to the Jamaican community. Truly the consummate "Story Teller", her passion for art and history makes her stories meaningful and inspiring as she delivers them orally as well as in her art of copper enamelling. Join the labrish as she shares her passion for keeping the Jamaican Anansi stories alive. This week’s selection for our “Person of the Week" is: Hazelle Rogers, the first Jamaican-American woman to be elected as a state representative for Florida .     Jamaica– History of LTM Pantomime!

    Happy New Year,  and welcome back to the Labrish.
    This week we take a stroll down memory lane for a look at
    one of the memorable events of the holiday season, the
    opening of the Pantomime on Boxing day.
     
    The Little Theatre Movement (LTM) has the distinction of being Jamaica’s longest theatre company of contemporary times. It was founded in 1941 by Henry Fowler and Greta Bourke (later
    Fowler) to raise funds for the building of a Little Theatre, and to help in the development of drama in Jamaica. From its inception, the LTM committed itself to a vigorous policy of serving the public and continues to do so today. From the first production in 1941 of: “Jack & the Beanstalk” to the 2012 production of: “Anansi & Goat Head Soup” , there is lots for 'labrish’ fans to discover and discuss.
    Join us as we bring the history of Henry & Greta’s passion to life. So, if you or someone you know have memories to share, be sure to join the Labrish.

    Join Mende as she talks Billy Burgos

    Billy Burgos is a 37 year old Portrait Painter/Designer originally from Belize Central America. His family migrated to Southern California when he was 8 years old. Billy has since traveled between coasts with family in Brooklyn N.Y. as well as South Los Angeles. After settling in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Billy became a regular fixture at The Anansi Writers Workshop where he gained a deeper appreciation for the written word. His poetry has since appeared in numerous anthologies as well as print and online journals since such as Gotpoetry, Lung and Killpoet. He has performed his poetry at many L.A. venues including The Worldstage, The Cobalt Cafe, Beyond Baroque, The Mark Taper Auditorium and Booksoup. In 2009 Billy was selected as an up and coming poet in The Los Angeles Poetry Festival and was a featured reader at the prestigious Newer Poets XIV inside the Central Library. Billy also serves as a curator on staff at Gotpoetry.com. At present Billy is working on his first collection of poems that deals with the days surrounding the death of his father. He is also working on a children's book of short stories which he Illustrated as well.
