Alcoholism is a family disease, a deadly one that cannot be fought by the substance abuser alone. That said, it is always an uphill battle. Those close to the alcoholic suffer tremendously. Logic does not work when dealing with addicts, nor does pleading or crying. We cannot force them to get help. We can only love and support them, give them every reason to want sobriety for themselves, and then pray that they will choose survival.
Today's special guest, Alberta Sequeira has lived this nightmare and fought this battle twice; first with her husband, and then with her daughter. Tragically, both of these battles were lost. Her husband and daughter both succumbed to their diseases. In the hopes that other families suffering similar addictions will recognize the problem, come out of hiding, and seek help without fear or embarrassment, Alberta has shared her story. She has written two hearfelt memoirs; Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round: An Alcoholic Family in Crisis, and Please, God, Not Two: This Killer Called Alcoholism.
Alberta Sequeira is a writer, four-time award winning author, motivational speaker, and director/producer/co-host of a Massachusetts Cable TV show. She also teaches workshops for writers. Today she will tell her story, sharing hope and inspiration to all.

Cremona, Alberta's Blake Reid's new album Rust showcases his status status as a true workingman’s poet, following in the footsteps of Merle Haggard and Tom T. Hall. At the same time, he is no traditionalist. The album’s first single, “Sounds Like A Song,” is the kind of hard-edged, instantly memorable track perfectly suited for a Saturday night play list, or as something to sing along with to make that long drive go a little bit faster. And as a testament to the power of songcraft, it’s also a reflection of the only real musical education Blake ever had, listening to AM radios installed in the trucks, tractors and combines he commandeered throughout his youth.
“I’ve always written songs, but during the years while performing in the club and rodeo circuits, we had to limit the amount of original material we were playing. In 2011 I decided to take a break from the band and really concentrate on writing songs that spoke to who I was, and to just be me without apology. I discovered right away how much people appreciated that, and I started building a new following. Getting a standing ovation the first time I played Big Valley Jamboree really confirmed it all for me, and since then I can’t see any way to do things other than just be who I am.”
And while much of the material on Rust is rooted in the Alberta soil that five generations of his family has farmed for over a century, the themes at the heart of the songs are universally relatable. For instance, many people have had the same fantasy captured in “Cowboys Were Kings” of somehow escaping fast-paced modern life and waking up in a ‘tumbleweed town’ or, as on the powerful “Ghosts,” been in their favourite bar and had the full weight of its history, and the people who used to drink there, suddenly come to light.

Canada and its environment. Its air, water, lands, coastlines and glaciers. The last ten years is not a very positive recent past. The Harper Government withdrew from the Kyoto Accord, did absolutely nothing at Copenhagen and stayed on message that climate change was fake. A ruse by enviroterrorists to deny "Canadians" the "benefits" of a resource economy on steroids and wearing a blindfold. A decade later and Canada is the poster boy for failure in environmental stewardship.
COP21 in Paris promises to be different. The increase in major emitter participation in real planning has never been higher. There have never been so many public policies from nations on climate before. Have we heard this before? Well, yes and no. Despite the new level of urgency and co-operation, there will also be a massive corporate presence at the tables. How can one deny the inevitable industry being built to deal with this mess. And it won't be cheap even if it were.
Prime Minister Trudeau will be joined by Premiers, Environment Ministers and scientists in Paris. A united front for action is the narrative. Alberta has led the way domestically with introduction of "Carbon Plan". Astroturf lobbies and sycophantic politicians warn of the economy disappearing. Yet the industry says they can work with it and it is reasonable on initial appearance. Cue the CPC end of days fundraising videos. Apparently, change is still evil.
Some regions are much better equipped for the shift from carbon to renewables than others and that's just domestically. Globally it's a much more visible issue. This is where our old friend Politics comes in. Recent events have basically outlawed protests of any kind in Paris. The efforts will now be dispersed around the world but may be even stronger given the access by all to be heard.
Lots to look at in two hours, but we will do our best and you are invited.
