  Human rights are "commonly understood as inalienable fundamental rights to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being .
  In their fight for independence, African peoples drew upon human rights standards to justify their struggle. On account of colonization, African people suffered from years of oppression and gross human rights abuses. As such, they used their struggle to expose these abuses and fight for their liberation.
