Scott Cluthe talks with Dr. Rob Pennington tonight. Rob is author of Find The Upside Of The Down Times:How To Turn Your Worst Experiences Into Your Best Opportunities
Dr. Pennington says of his new book, "The basic premise of this book is that life throws experiences at us that may feel devastating, depressing, unfortunate or simply unfair. We often describe these stories to other people as, “It was one of the worst things that ever happened to me.” But when we can learn to view these challenges in a different way we can turn the worst things that happen to us into our best opportunities."
In each chapter, psychologist Dr. Rob Pennington tells the reader a humorous, heartwarming, and true story of a difficult situation that he experienced. Each chapter begins by turning around the commonly used phrase, “It was one of the worst things that ever happened to me,” by introducing the
story as “one of the best things that ever happened to me.” The first chapter begins with the phrase, “I was shot in the center of the chest by an unknown assailant with a .38 caliber handgun. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me.” Each chapter follows suit, introducing a new story with the same turn of phrase, and then continuing to describe what Dr. Pennington
learned that turned the story around to end with a positive result. These stories include being shot in the chest, having no health insurance, losing half of his yearly income with one phone call, being fired, being divorced, and living with a wife who was diagnosed with an incurable illness.
