This story had been told in its true form until adults thought it would be nice to add little friendly touches to it such as forgetting that her father was an abusive jerk and his mother was in the oldest profession or, at least, very lose. They even changed the ending to be on Christmas and a little more politically correct than just the little girl freezing to death against a cold wall. Listen to the original story.
