Why is it so hard to be completely honest?

As supposingly mature adults we are suppose to be able to express and communicate ourselves fully. But a majority of the time we seem to find ourselves telling that 'little white lie" for no reason. Rather it is to protect someones feeling, or give the appearance of something thats not true about ourselves the bottom line is why is honesty so hard for us?
