When confronted with difficulties in our dealings with others, or with the world itself, we can become prone to ‘blanking out’ our feelings of anger, frustration and guilt, and may attempt to retreat into ‘positive thinking’ or other strategies in order to feel safe and secure again. Recently I came into contact with some of the most violent acts that one human being can do to another, and I experienced such a deep sorrow and sense of powerlessness along with an overwhelming sense that I could not understand how such things could be visited by one soul on another. The pain this brought up in me helped me to understand that I do not comprehend the depth of fear and the absence of love that many humans feel. I was now confronted with my own fear, my own anger, and my own guilt. A kind and steady inner voice encouraged me to forgive, and let go of my demand to understand what was happening, or even to try and change it. Radical forgiveness is for everyone, and is a essential component to changing the world…without violence.
