The word of God declares "Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me!

Jesus gave us three steps to lose our lives that we might find eternal life, which is the abundant life He promised us if we obey and endure to the end.

Deny yourself deals with your soulish realm, your mind, will, intellect and emotions.  Take up your cross deals with your flesh, the sin nature and your Adamic nature.  Follow me deals with your spirit man, which has been sealed with the spirit of Christ. 

If you obey all three commands, your soul, flesh and spirit will be in agreement with God and only then can you effectively follow Christ as one of His disciples and come to experience the abundant life He has promised, which is eternal life found in Christ Jesus.
