Join Angela Thomas & Rodney Smith as they discuss, What Do Black People Want” part 2. Febuary is our nations celebration of Black History. It is a time to celebrate a people that helped build this great country but also to reflect back on how these same people were oppressed by this country. There have been many challenges and successes but arguably as a people, African Americans still are not where they should be. Does anyone know what Black people want? We know what other groups want. The union’s want honest wages for an honest day’s pay, fair labor practices and benefits. The LGBT community want marriage rights and up to recently the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Jewish Americans want a safe, secure and free homeland in Israel. Hispanic and Latino’s want immigration reform, citizenship rights and drivers license for the undocumented. The question now is, ‘What Do Black People Want? Phi Beta Sigma Las Vegas Chapter held a forum and panel discussion this week on what do people of color want? What do Black People want was also a discussion at Our Own Voices weekly community gathering yesterday. What was most interesting is that when asked, most people only gave generalities like better education, being treated fairly, jobs and better portrayal in the media. When asked to be more specific it provokes silence and more thought. Here are a few things that we have come up with since first asking the question, “What Do Black People Want,” over a month ago: Making the voter registration Act permanent, declaring a state of emergency for Black men, national apology for slavery and incorporating African & African American History in the general education curriculum. Let us know what you think. Is this a valid question? Do we even need Black History month? Join Angela & Rodney as we tackle this question.
