Amanee Gordon is an Animal Science major from Southern California, currently in her junior year at Tuskegee University. She loves animals, but also has a passion for conserving the environment. Amanee adores sciences and everything she does is to advance her education and help her community. She also runs a blog in her free time.
In 2014, as a second semester Freshman during the Fall of that year, she was a research assistant in a goat spermatogenesis laboratory, managed by the Department Head of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (Dr. Olga Bolden-Tiller).This was her first time in a state of the art laboratory. In Fall of 2015, while still working in the goat laboratory, she took on another task of becoming a researcher in the iBreed laboratory (specializing in plant breeding) and managed by Dr. Marceline Egnin, Plant and Soil Science Professor. There, her primary research interest was bamboo: embryo rescue, regeneration, and energy gene testing. While working in this lab, she completed proper laboratory health and safety training, DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, plant breeding, and tissue culture. The goal was to test the practical use of bamboo as bioenergy. I worked in this laboratory for one semester.
Lastly, and most recently, she has been welcomed into the Sustainable Nanotechnology Laboratory, which is managed by Dr. Michael Curry, Chemistry Professor. During her time in this lab so far, she has been taught how to successfully synthesize cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibrils via chemical and mechanical methodologies. My primary interest is to produce biodegradable nanocomposites. She plans to finish college next Spring and eventually apply to a PhD program for either animal science, sustainable nanotechnology, or astrophysics. By sharpening her knowledge in the many different subjects that she takes interest in, I can adequately assess situations that could arise, with ease.
