NIR Irvine Carvery

Irvine Carvery-was born in Africville Nova Stotia, married with three children and five grandchildren.Irvine was removed from his Community at the age of 25, he began his work to seek proper compensation for his people in 1985, when he became President of the Africville Genealogy Society. It was under his leadership that the rest of Canada and the world began to know the story of Africville. This started with an exhibit called The Sprirt of Africville which told the story from the people of Africville's perspective outlining the long rich cultural importance of Africville.There was also a book published, Remembering Africville and a documentary The Spirit of Africville. These events happened between 1989 and 1992. Irivne continued pressuring the City until finally in 2010, the City offerred the People of Africville a formal apology along with funds and land to rebuild Seaview African United Baptist Church to serve as a museum to tell the story of our Community.

Irvine also was the first African Nova Scotian Chair of the Halifax Regional School Board, a position he held for 4 years.
