He could hide behind it to protect his entire body from harm during a battle. Most shields in that time used by foot soldiers were made of leather. However leather could and would catch fire if hit by a fiery dart. Therefore a soldier must keep his shield soaked in water to retard the combustable materials in the fiery darts launched at him. You would die if your shield caught on fire therefore it must be soaked in water. Saints likewise must keep the shield of faith soaked in the word of God.
