D’Wolf was a late starter, but quickly learned the fundamentals of trumpet playing. He recounts that his high school band director, an accomplished trumpet player and a Clifford Brown fan, would always say “If you play trumpet you must know Clifford, Lee, Dizzy, Fats, Booker, and Miles. If you don’t know’em, you don’t know trumpet”
