In 2011 Brian Rich decided to push back against the trend to make our national Thanksgiving holiday into another shopping day, what he calls "Black Thursday." He founded a Facebook page to get information out: a "Shop This, Not That" list of businesses who close versus those who stay open, online petitions, and personal stories of employees who have lost their jobs or fear losing them if they choose to stay home with their families.
The movement has gathered steam this year, as more retailers choose to open early on Thanksgiving, and the page now boasts over 95,000 active and vocal followers.
