It all necessitates being able to be present with our emotions and able to use and share them in our lives. But the problem is that many of us are uncomfortable with our feelings. It’s what I call a “feelings phobia.” We get close to our feelings, feel anxious, and then avoid them. We do all these things to avoid really being present with our feelings—things we’re not even aware that we’re doing (distracting ourselves, changing the subject, tensing up). Unfortunately, it’s impossible to go the distance, to really live like you mean it, unless you can be fully present with your feelings. We end up cut off from the wisdom and power inside of us, held back in our jobs and relationships, and thwarted from reaching our true potential.
