Show Notes

Shows are produced and Engineered by Russ Passage

Here at Cocktail Hour we are producing two different shows. "Cocktail Hour" and "Cocktail Hour - Classic Rock Showcase."

COCKTAIL HOUR - Welcome to the monkey house where our roundtable talk sometimes takes on the aspects of a zoo. Between sips of an afternoon beverage...or two, a discussion of unusual and odd articles of news, politics, sports and other issues over cocktails with humor and wit ensues. Our group of non-experts belly up to the microphone to take a series of topics and "bar-talk" them over. The results can be unpredictable. This is show that should appeal to everyone. Wednesdays at 6 PM EST.

COCKTAIL HOUR-CLASSIC ROCK SHOWCASE- The classic rock showcase features classic musicians and styles with an emphasis on rarely heard music. Each week we feature an artist or band and focus into the cream of their music. The show features alternate cuts, lost classic songs, and many things that are scarcely heard on the radio. So start your Friday out right with some great tunes. 6 PM EST

COCKTAIL HOUR PRESENTS-CLASSIC ROCK SHOWCASE-BAD BRAINS

THIS IS MUSIC, NOT AN INTERVIEW. This classic rock showcase features Bad Brains, one of the great classic punk rock bands but they also produced some high quality reggae. The show will be featuring their excellent reggae style. Check this out for a showcase of rare and unusual music with cuts that are scarcely heard on the radio. So start your Friday out right with some great Reggae tunes.

Bad Brains are an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1977. They are widely regarded as being among the pioneers of the genre, though the band's members objected to the term "hardcore" to describe their music. Minor Threat, who also were formed in Washington, D.C., were influenced by this type of hardcore punk and adopted it as their primary style. Originally formed as a jazz fusion ensemble under the name Mind Power, Bad Brains developed a very fast and intense punk rock sound, which was both musically complex, and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. They were also an adept reggae band, in a sort of Jekyll-and-Hyde arrangement, while later recordings featured elements of other genres. Bad Brains are also notable as religious followers of the Rastafari movement. Bad Brains broke up and reformed several times over the years, sometimes with different singers and/or drummers. The band's classic and current lineup is singer H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson, H.R.'s younger brother. Bad Brains were ranked #99 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. Though the official name of the band is Bad Brains, they are often referred to as The Bad Brains, sometimes even by the band members themselves. Beastie Boys were huge Bad Brains fans, and they intentionally selected a name with the initials B.B. because of this.

COCKTAIL HOUR PRESENTS - CLASSIC ROCK SHOWCASE - CANNED HEAT

THIS IS MUSIC, NOT AN INTERVIEW. This classic rock showcase features Canned Heat, one of the great classic rock/blues/boogie bands. Check this out for a showcase of rare and unusual music with cuts that are scarcely heard on the radio. Take trip back to the 60's and 70's with one of the classic bands from Woodstock. So start Your Friday our right with some great Rock and Boogie. Canned Heat is a blues-rock/boogie band that formed in Los Angeles in 1965. The group has been noted for its own interpretations of blues material as well as for efforts to promote the interest in this type of music and its original artists. It was launched by two blues enthusiasts, Alan Wilson and Bob Hite, who took the name from Tommy Johnson's 1928 "Canned Heat Blues", a song about an alcoholic who had desperately turned to drinking Sterno, generically called "canned heat". After appearances at Monterey and Woodstock, at the end of the '60s the band acquired worldwide fame with a lineup consisting of Bob Hite, vocals, Alan Wilson guitar, harmonica and vocals, Henry Vestine (or Harvey Mandel) on lead guitar, Larry Taylor on bass, and Adolfo ('Fito') de la Parra on drums. The music and attitude of Canned Heat afforded them a large following and established the band as one of the popular acts of the hippie era. Canned Heat appeared at most major musical events at the end of the '60s and they were able to deliver on stage electrifying performances of blues standards and their own material and occasionally to indulge into lengthier 'psychedelic' solos. Two of their songs - "Going up the Country" and "On the Road Again" - became international hits; both were re-workings of obscure blues. At the time all their albums were released for worldwide distribution. Since the early '70s numerous personnel changes have occurred and today, in the fifth decade of the band's existence, Fito de la Parra is the only member from the "classic" 1960s lineup. He has written a book about the band's career

COCKTAIL HOUR PRESENTS - CLASSIC ROCK SHOWCASE

THIS IS MUSIC, NOT AN INTERVIEW. This classic rock showcase feature Voivod, one of the great underrated rock bands. Check this out for a showcase of rare and unusual music that is scarcely heard on the radio. This will be a fun and entertaining excursion into Sci-Fi rock. Voivod are a Canadian heavy metal band from Jonquière, Quebec, Canada. Their musical style has changed several times since the band's origin in the early 1980s. Starting out as a speed metal band, Voivod have added a mix of progressive metal and thrash metal to try to create their own unique metal style. Since its debut record in 1984, Voivod have released eleven studio albums as well as one EP, one live album, two compilations, seven demos and one DVD featuring a live concert. The band found mainstream success in the late 1980s with its most successful album Nothingface (1989), which was the first Voivod album to enter the Billboard 200 charts, peaking at number 114. Voivod have finished recording their twelfth studio album, Infini, which is due for release on June 23, 2009 and will contain songs that were recorded prior to guitarist Piggy's death in 2005. Songs featured are: Astronomy Domine, Tribal Convictions, 21st Century Schizoid Man, and Most of the Phobos album.
