Imagine just for a second feeling like no one is on your level intellectually, emotionally and psychologically for most of your young life, how would growing up have felt to you? Shaundra has felt that way ever since she could learn how to read people. This coming of age tale follows a young African American girl growing up in a world where she has decided to make her own rules. When Shaundra was a little girl her mother moved her from south Alabama where that was the only world she was exposed and where people accepted her with no questions asked. She and her mother moved to sunny California where life was unexpected and people were completely different from how she thought people should be. While materialistically Shaundra’s life couldn’t have been any better, emotionally she is weighed down by her friends, family and her ‘love/lust’ life. Because she is smarter than the average kids her age she learns how to deal with the tough situations as they happen. No adult truly knows how to deal with her because they are not sure if they’re talking to a child or their peer. No one her age can deal with her ‘adult’ like attitude, so consequently she loses friends just by trying to help them. Shaundra is an opinionated girl. If Shaundra doesn’t agree with someone’s life style she will definitely tell them, which is also something that keeps her friendless most of the time. This is one girl who at a very young age set out to do only what she wanted to do. About the Author: Tekeilla Renee Peterson holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Communications with an emphasis in Journalism from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
