A new school year has started and schools all over the country have reported that a higher percentage of students have officially dropped out of school than anticipated. This weekend the Houston Independent School District [hosted] the sixth annual “Reach Out to Dropouts Walk”. [As a result] 64 dropouts [decided to go] back to school. Volunteers and staff targeted 23 high schools Saturday and directly contacted 712 former students or their parents - (Source: Sherry Williams Channel 11 News). This is a different time and students have very different needs. Is the system doing enough to keep our students in the classroom? Do enough programs exist that cater to their needs? Are the parents doing enough? Question: What can we do to close the high school dropout gap? Please join me and Houston City Council Member Jarvis Johnson and others as we discuss - How to save our Drop-outs.
