As I was reseaching tonights blog I was overwhelmed with concern.  First there are those who perpetrate violence and use addiction as an excuse.  Then there are those who have been abused and have become addicted as a way of self medicating.  Let's talk about domestic violence and substance abuse.  The facts will alarm you.  The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse found that 69% of women being treated for substance abuse reported they were sexually abused as children.  The Department of Justice found in 2002 that 36% of victims in DV programs also had problem with substance abuse. 51% of DV program directors report- a women's use alcohol can be a barrier to leaving an abusive relationship. An even greater percentage- 87%- of DV program directors agree violence increases when both partners abuse drugs or alcohol. Call in and listen to the show at (213) 943-3799 @ 7:30 CST.
