We interview David Alexander Hitt and Bishop Henry C. Williams of Oakland, Calif. Bishop Williams has devised a national program to recover the lost wages, time, property and life’s chances that Black farm workers were deprived of under what he decried as modern-day slavery. Calling his plan “The 40 Acres and a Mule Reparations March,” Bishop Williams said “sharecropping-slavery” is the root cause of Black poverty in today’s United States.
