SPONSORED BY CARL TONE JONES--Sports...one of the ultimate gods in our child's eyes. It is an aspiration pushed by the sensationalism of the media and society's worship of athletes. One other powerful factor pushing the sports field as the VIP Occupation Aspiration is our children's school. Gone away is the protocol that focuses on the importance of academics to succeed in life choices for success and character, here to stay is the accentuated steering of our children to keep their eyes on "The Dream" of being "like Mike', Kobe or Lebron. This is much more heavily implemented in the Black community. Sports is one of the few things that is freely offered, supported, and promoted for African-American students at any cost---more often than not that means helping these students "move up" in school when they truly didn't earn it. Have we glorified sports to our children's detriment? Are athletic students being taught to make the athlete, not the grade?
