Beneath the Helmet shows how young Israelis, serving in the army just out of high school, face enormous struggles with their identity and their responsibilities as soldiers, said First Lt. (Res.) Aviv Regev, an Israeli deputy platoon commander who is featured in the film, grew up in northern Israel, and spent several years in New Jersey when he was a child.

At the age of 18, these brave young men and women are drafted into service to defend not only their homes, but our shared values of peace, equality, opportunity, democracy, religious tolerance, and women’s rights.  Along the way these young individuals, away from their homes, family, and friends, undergo a demanding journey, revealing the core of who they are and who they want to be.
